Show THE LEADER, Stamps To Be Sold Tremonton. Utah Thursday. October II. 1956 Tremonton philatelists will be pleased to learn that the government is going to start selling stamp collectors the canceled stamps it gets on incoming world-wid- e mail in hopes of adding a few extra dollars to the treasury. The idea came from Roger Steffan, a retired banker who is director of operations at the White House. He recalled that many financial institutions save incoming foreign stamps and sell them to dealers at a profit. He suggested the government do likewise. Collectors are invited to bid for stamps clipped from both foreign and domestic mail. They will come from letters to the White House, the U. S. Information Agency, the Foreign Operations Administration and sections of the Treasury and Commence departments. Most people are completely unprepared and be wildered when one of their loved ones becomes mentally ill because there is still so much shame connected with mental illness, so much ignorance about its nature, and about the kind of treatment available. Relatives would save them selves a great deal of heartache if they could accept the fact that mental illness is an illness like any other, to which some individuals are subject and to which modern medical science has found many of the answers. Not one of them has a workers living standard more than one third as high as we have in America The more Socialism a nation has, the more restricted is the workers freedom and the deeper his proverty. With this fact in mind, the recent tesimony of Nikolai Khokhlov before the Activities House Committee ought to be carefully read by every worker, every the free citizen, throughout world. "At every step the ordinary man in the Soviet Union is treat ed as a slave," said Khokhlov, the former officer of the Russian secret police whom our Congressmen describe as one of the most valuable witnesses ever to testify on the Communist conspiracy. His testimony continued: Communist Slavery "Let me give you an example: You are a worker in a plant, you don't like your job, but you cannot quit. If you try to or I should leave, the director say the boss assigned by the party, can always stop you because you even arrest you do not have the legal right to leave your job. Or, if you come 20 minutes late on your job, automatically you get a 25 per cent cut in your salary for six months. This is a part of the labor discipline decree published in 1940 and still maintained in force. "If you come 20 minutes late a second time, you should be brought to trial, carrying a penalty up to one year in jail. This usually doesn't happen because the director of the plant or factory is interested in keeping you on the job, and, therefore, he just overlooks it. But he continues to take the 25 per cent of your salary for another six months. Permit To Travel "I would like to stress another point . . . All citizens in the Soviet Union have to have a passport. In other words, an identification booklet, which you may need at any time. If you cross the main street anywhere not permitted by traffic law, the first thing the police will ask for is your passport. In this booklet besides your personal identifications, your civic status, relation to military service (there also must be recorded) all your movements throughout the country. "You cannot even move from one house to another without an entry being made in the book, and you cannot stay in a town other than" your own longer than 24 hours without getting your book stamped." Khokhlov went on to describe the miserable living conditions of the Russians, particularly the workers families. But Communist officialdom, he said, lived very well. "I would like to stress again," he said, "that the conflict between the Soviet people and the Soviet Government is not primarily based upon the standard of liv ing, ine contact was ana is based upon the lack of personal freedoms." Poverty and slavery thus are the realities of the golden promise of Russia's "workers BABSON'S AUTHENTIC STATEMENT Discusses Oil Stocks ! Babson Park, Mass., Sept. 27. There also is fear with the that present surplus of oil the income-ta- x consideration given oil companies may be taken away. This could easily happen if the price of gasoline increases much more while there is a surplus. The oil companies are also watching what has hap pened to the coal companies. ine reeling is that sooner or later the oil producers may also suffer. Long-TerOutlook For Oil Although oil will have com petition from power generated in other ways, oil consumption will increase for many years to come. Demand for electricity is constantly rising, the availabil sites ity of new is decreasing, and the plants generating electricity constantly demand greater fuel supply Although coal consumption as a whole is declining, the efficiently operated mines near the big power houses are making money This means that holders of coal stocks should carefully check the operating costs and locations of the mines in which they are interested. Although most coal stocks should probably be sold today, there are doubtless some which should be purchased. It is reported that more cand les, more kerosene, more gas, and other fuels are being used today than at any time in the past hundred years, notwithstanding the tremendous expansion of electricity lor power, lighting, and heating. In fact, I recently heard of a young man who has developed a profitable usiness supplying hardwood or fireplaces. Anyone desiring to start a new business chain today might well own hardwood lots near several large cities and deliver standard quality of hard wood, under a special trade name which could be nationally advertised! I am willing to forecast that a hundred years from now perhaps a thousand years from now people will be burning candles on their dinner tables and hardwood in their fireplaces. Peacetime Uses For The Atom Privately, I believe that it is the fear of uranium as a source of heat which is causing many investors to take profits on their oil stocks. Missouri, recently apprehended, has admitted robbing post office boxes in at least five states of thousands of dollars in checks. His method was to make regular visits to the lobbies of various post offices and try to open all the post office boxes. A large pernumber of sons neglected to make certain that their boxes were securely locked after they had gotten their mail. As a result, the thief had no difficulty in stealing numerous checks. We hope no one will try this stunt at the Tremonton Post Office, but we would caution all box holders to double check their boxes to make sure they are securely locked before leaving the office. As a convenience to post office box holders, the lobby of the post office is open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and you get it!
