Northern Utah RIVERSIDE Methodist Church By Myrle Udy New SOIL CONSERVATION DISTRICT NEWS COLUMN Reservoirs, Stock Ponds feed To Preserve Precious Water Water on Utah ranges is definitely it's life blood. It is precwe must make the best ious use of our limited supply. Without water our ranges are worthless. Water can be developed almost anywhere in our area. Cost of development is the only limiting factor. If the rancher is serious in his desire to develop water it can be done. However ' ranchers in Box Elder County do not seem to be ready to spend as much for water as they do on the Arizona strip where water is really scarce. For those who need more water here are a few suggestions as to ways and means of improving their water supply on then-range- Consult the Water Laws of the State before starting work on any water development project. It is important when building a reservoir that the drainto age area be large enough yield enough runoff to maintain the water supply during ' periods of drought. However, the watershed should not be so large that there will be a flood hazard during storm periods or that large expensive overflow structures would be required. stock reservoirs Generally, should be on small tributaries rather than on main streams. Size Varies The size of the reservoir will depend on the number of livestock to be watered and the length of time they will depend on the reservoir for water.. As a rule,, cattle and horses need 2 gallons per day while sheep require a gallon or less of water per day- Seepage and evaporation losses must also be considered when building a reservoir. The reservoir should be deep so that there will be maximum storage capacity with minimum surface area exposed to evaporation. The total capacity snould be greater than is actually needed to allow for seepage and evaporation losses. In order to maintain the capacity of the reservoir, the inflow must be reasonably free from silt. The best silt conttfol protection is proper grazing on 10-1- - the contributing watershed so as to keep grass cover in good condition and so prevent erosion. Study Runoff The amount of runoff from a given drainage area is dependent on many interrelated factors such as size, shape, soil, vegetal cover and storm characteristics. All of these things must be taken into consideration when planning a reservoir. In some areas of heavy' snowfall and drifting, it is possible to build reservoirs in such a way as to catch the snow melt as it runs offjW feners can be used to increase the now catch and ptovide mor vi.tti. mul-.cl straw on top of the drifts will slow down mo t an 1 provide Jrte spring or summer - ater. Another method of collecting water for storage is by constructing hard surfaced catchment basins of concrete, blacktop or tin. Any precipitation immediately runs off and can be stored in a covered tank and then metered to a stock tank by use of a float valve. One inch of rain on an acre of such a runoff area would produce 21,154 gallons. Horace Hunsaker built a small reservoir to catch t'.e runoff from his hard packed farm yard. He wa amazed to find water more tn- - two feet deep in the pond even this yoar. Check Sitee Reservoir sites should be investigated and staked out by qualified technicians. A properly located site will mors than pay for the time necessary to locate it. There are two types of reservoirs, excavated and impounding. The excavated type is adapted to flat country and is in iho earth. simply a dug-ou- t It capacity is limited by Use cost of typp is easily constructed, inexpetvi"?, easily maintained ani flexible in locatLr It should b. located on imperiO-isoil; otherw;-e- , expensive liings will be necessary. Impounding: Type The impounding typ? of res ervoir is formed of an earth fill across a narrow draw or Valley. It is best adapted to rolling terrain writh well defined drainage channels. The fr';e and capacity of this type of reservoir is largely determined by topography of the surrounding country and must hav: a protected sviJway to bypass flood Ii iLere is nol a natura spillway protected with native vegetation with enough capacity to carry excess flood waters vithout erosion on,' must be shaped and seeded. ju fme cases it will be necessary to build a r.iasonary or concrete spillway in order to prevent erosion by overflow water. The best type of fill material for an impounding reservoir consists of about 23 soil and gravel and 13 clay. This type of soil is stable and easily compacted to make it relatively impervious. Pipe Lines If a pipe line is to be provided to supply a tank below the reservoir, it should be installed on solid, undisturbed soil before i Trsmonton.
