In this county cattle commonly severely infested by one or more kinds of blood sucking lice. These parasites lower the vitality, retnrd rate of growth, reduce m'lk production and cause continual irritation." In Agri-ultu- re h-'i- be-co- SAVE THE FEDERAL WAY Get heavy infestations severe anemia occurs. This all results in a large financial loss to the livestock owners whose animals are infested with these parasites. The loss from cattle lice to the livestock owners is much greater than generally has been recognized. Blood sucking lice are small, wingless insects. They have mouth-part- s which pierce the skin. They live only on the blood from the animals which they attack. Eggs are glued to the body hairs of animals by lice.. These are commonly known as "nits". When first hatched, young lice resemble the adults, but they are very 'tiny. Cattle lice control is a pro gram which needs fall and win ter attention. These lice can be controlled either by dipping or spraying. In addition, infested animals may receive relief from lice through applications of dusts or washed of effective in of the lice from animals by means of a single treatment. all lice which have hatched from eggs which were present when the first dipping occured, before they mature and lay eggs, or complete cleanup can not be expected. This treatment does not kill lice which are in the egg stage. Cattle lice control is possible by means of sprays. However, two extremely thorough applications usually are necessary if eradication is attempted. One thorough fall treatment will afford much reief to infested but two treatments give greater freedom from lice. When rotenone is the insecticide used, always make a second application within 14 or 16 days of the first. Spray all parts of each animal thoroughly with DDT, methoxy-chlotoxaphene or chlordane, using 8 pounds of the 50 percent wettable powder in 100 gallons of water. If emulsion instead of wettable powder is used, an equivalent strength of the insecticide in the spray usually is required. Lindane, used at a strength of 1 pound of the 25 percent wettable powder (or of equal strength if emulsion form is used) in each 100 gallons of water, also gives a good control of lice on cattle. Benzene hexachloride gives excellent control of cattle lice. Apply at the dosage recommended on the manufacturer's label. Dusts and washes may be applied, where only a few animals are involved. Use only the ro. tenone as a wash on dairy cows. This is made by mixing 0.1 pounds of 5 percent roaenone strength cube or derris ground root in each 5 gallons of water. Be sure to repeat this treatment in 14 or 16 days. Do not allow infested animals e to mix with cattle, or reihfes tat ion will occur. CAUTION: only methaxychl-or- , lindane, rotenone or insecticides shauld be applied as sprays to dairy cows being milked. an-ima- e, r, lice-fre- Cattle lice can be affectively controlled when livestock are dipped in a solution containing On Savings Insured 8 pounds of 50 percent wettable DDT in each gallon of water. up to $10,000 Com 2 in or save Two dippings, 14 to 16 days apart may be made, using a solby mail at ution of 1 pound of 5 percent FIIICT FEDERAL rotenone strength finely ground BOX ELDER COUNTY SAVINGS derris or cube powder, and 10 4 H CLUB AND LOAN pounds of 325 mesh wettable GIRLS ASSOCIATION AT STATE FAIR sulfur, in each 100 gallons of 12 West Center water.
