Experiments have been run at the Agricultural Ex periment Station with several kinds of material for the treating of these insects and they have found that 10 percent DDT dust has given the best results. This will also control the sap bettle (Nitidulidie). This is a little dark brown bettle, which generally comes in after the corn ear worm has gotten into the ear. In home gardens probably one of the easiest ways to control the ear worm is to use a rather stiff paint brush and brush the silk starting to come out on the stock. Apply DDT with the brush by dipping the brush into the can or package of DDT and place that on the silk shaking a little of the DDT into the silk. mis snomci begin as soon as the first silk starts showing then every 3 or 4 days for 3 or 4 dif ferent applications. Experiments have shown that 75 to 80 per cent of the ears will be free from ear worms if this proceedure is used. On a commercial scale, you should use a large duster and apply it at least three times, starting when 5 to 10 percent of the silk is out. then at three or four day intervals. This has given satisfactory results. The main thing is to get the dust onto the silk before the moth lays her eggs and the small worm starts ;;oin;; into the ear. Often it is possible to see the worm in the tassell of the corn before the silk starts coming out. In this case, it might be advisable to dust in commercial fields when the silk is just starting to come, otherwise, some of the worms may get into the ears before the dust is applied. It is very important field Cured hay will lose up to 25rt of dry matter and 3()r of protein found in the standing crop, tests show. Prevent such losses by barn curing electrically . . . and save in reduction of supplementary feed costs, fewer weather risks, time saved in getting hay in, and better farm products.
