The "Beaver Volleyball team stepped onto their home court and caught the familiar scent of a wooden gym floor. They glanced to their right and spotted a sign made by their fellow cheerleaders. It said, "Soar Over the Eagles." The Beaver Volleyball team kept this phrase in mind as they stepped onto the court ready to play. The Varsity played like a team throughout the whole match. They won the first game the awesome Altogether, Beaver front row accumulated 20 kills. They entered the second game confident and were once again victorious with a 1 win over the Eagles. Meanwhile at. the back of the court, the fantastic back row managed to dig up 31 balls. The Beavers won the third game winning the entire match in three games. There was a fabulous showing at the service line with 18 aces from the Beavers. Congratulations to the Volleyball team for their second region win. 25-2- 2. The Southern United States has been thrashed lately by vicious hurricanes. The most recent of these hurricanes to come ashore, Hurricane Rita, was no exception. Hurricane Rita was the seventeenth named tropical storm, ninth hurricane, fifth major hurricane, and second Category Five hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. Rita is the second time an "R" name has been used since the naming of storms began in 1950. Rita holds the record for the strongest recorded hunicane to enter the Gulf of Mexico, with peak sustained winds of 175 mph, as well as holding the record for the quickest drop of pressure in one hour. Rita made landfall between Sabine Pass, Texas, and Johnson's Bayou, Louisiana on 2005. 24, September Hurricane Rita was a Category-Thre- e storm when it came ashore at 1:30 in the morning, which was quite fortunate considering it was a Category Five storm less than 48 hours before. There was large scale evacuation throughout Texas and Louisiana. This was particularly disturbing for many of those who traveled to Houston after surviving Hurricane Katrina, as they then weathered another severe hurricane. Storm surges of fifteen to twenty feet were in recorded southwestern Louisiana. As confirmed on September 25, there have been 29 deaths, four in Mississippi and 25 in Texas. All but two of these deaths were due to accidents during the evacuation. On September 23, a bus carrying 45 elderly evacuees burst into flames and exploded on the freeway, and 24 died in this tragedy. Hurricane Rita could have severe economic ramifications In the wake of as well. Hurricane Katrina, four refineries have remained shut. However, in preparation for Hurricane Rita, 16 refineries closed their doors. According to the EIA, the amount of capacity shut down equals nearly five million barrels a day. This accounts for as much as 2.2 million barrels per day of gasoline. This could cause gas prices to skyrocket because the supply is lowered as the ongoing demand is heightened, made even worse by the fact that trucking to the stricken area has greatly increased, using even more gasoline. Through it all, Hurricane Rita will be remembered for her strength and aftermath, another giant smashing the southern coastal states. 25-1- 25-1- 6, Teen Council Signups Due 4-- H 2005-0- i. , Beatrice Willden and Lavoone Waldren for the great job they did weekly showing the visitors through the museum. A former Beaver resident, Sue Murdock from San Clemente, California visited our museum looking for histories of her family. She seen the need for a copy machine at the museum so she donated one to the museum. We are very grateful for her generosity. We really appreciate all the people who have donated artifacts to the museum over the years, we have received several new items this past summer to add to are great collection of pioneer artifacts. The museum gives a great insight into our early pioneers and the way they lived, worked and played. Our goal is to preserve for future generations a unique picture into Beaver County History and all the great people who have lived here. They are called on frequently to help people find Histories and information about their pioneer families and they always are very willing to help. We also want to thank all the D.U.P members from the Greenwood, Anderson, Dorothy Williams and Nancy K. camps, who so willingly donated their time working at the museum during the summer.
