What effect does early detection have on the death rate from malignant melanoma? Catching malignant melanoma early makes a big difference. Education and increased awareness and thus a greater chance of early detection can save lives. Aren't some malignant more curable melanomas than others? Yes. In fact it is now possible to predict with considerable which accuracy malignant melanomas are curable and which are not. Thickness of the tumor is a key indicator. (With the aid of a microscope, thick- ness is measured from the outer surface of the skin to the of the tumor.) penetration Malignant melanomas that are removed when they are less than 0.75 mm (about 132 of an inch) thick can be cured in virtufollally all cases, as ow-up has repeatedly conlong-ter- firmed. However, progressively thicker malignant melanomas have, correspondingly poorer prognoses. Given these facts", it is essential that members of the medical profession, the allied health fields, and the general public be able to recognize early (thin) malignant melanomas, which can be so successfully treated. Prevention seems to be the key, what can I do? If you have all body surfaces examined regularly and see your doctor when you find changes in your skin, malignant melanoma can be stopped before it spreads to distant sites. Really, what are my chances of developing malignant melanoma? Who' s at risk? In general the risk of developing malignant melanoma increases as people grow older. A similar study found that those who took zinc lozenges had colds lasting an average of three days less than those who took nothing. In addition, people using zinc lozenges were bothered for a shorter period by coughing, headache, hoarseness, stuffed or runny noses, and sore throats. Cooking with olive oil, however, can get a little messy. Good cooks contend cooking with olive oil could be cleaner, healthier and less messy if they could do without brushes, bowls and basters. Fortunately, one cook has come up with a spray dispenser for olive oil that may make a big difference. This new device sprays out about a V teaspoon of oil per second. The oil comes out in a fine mist. The new sprayer lets you control the amount of fat used in cooking much better than you can drizzling oil out from the bottle or using a spoon or brush. Says the inventor, Tom Risch, "This dripless dispenser sprays a light mist of olive oil on salads, bread, pasta, meat and fish with- afterwards." What's more, since the dispenser, called Misto, never touches the food, there's no need to be concerned about picking up and spreading bacteria and there's also no propellant or chemicals to p worry about. mph. ronics America, Inc.
