By Dennis Hinkamp USU Extension Consumer Writer Thefloods, earthquakes and blizzards that have ravaged the rest of the country this winter should have Jtahns counting their blessings and the number of gallons of stored water they have. One of the simplest, but most neglected area of emergency food storage is water. This problem is compounded because home food storage programs rely heavily on dried foods such as beans, wheat and powdered milk. You may have enough calories stored to last six months, but do you have enough water? One gallon per day per person is the recommended minimum. More realistic though is about two quarts cor drinking plus a gallon for washing plus whatever water you might need for cooking. This is the bare minimum. Of course you won't be watering lawns during an emergency, but the average daily water consump-tio- n for Utahns is a staggering 218 gallons. You don't need to go out and buy specific storage bottles but not all food containers are fit for water storage. Bleach bottles, for instance are not approved for food or water storage. You should use them to store water for washing, but not if you have children in the house. They might start confusing bottles full of chlorine bleach with those only containing water. Plastic gallon milk bottles are safe, but not durable and may start leaking if stored for long periods. Glass gallon bottles like those usgd for apple cider are also safe, but be careful where you store them. An earthquake could destroy your water supply. Probably the perfect water storbottles are the two-litage type soda bottles. So, rather than throwing them away, just rinse them out, fill them up and send them off to the storage area. Although they pose no health hazard, you may want to discard any cardboard liners like those that are often inside the caps or glass bottles and some plastic bottles. Over time, the cardboard can degrade and cause off colors and flavors. Treated water out of the tap needs nothing added and should have a shelflife of about lOyears. Untreated water, from a well for instance, should be treated with about 16 drops of chlorine bleach per gallon. The more water you can store the longer you can survive ajid the more comfortable you will be during an emergency period. Although you can survive on a gallon a day, it is difficult when most of us are used to using 2 1 8 gallons a day. To convince yourself, try not using water out of the tap for a day. er Saturday, April 16 SJBe Beaver, UT Beaver Belknap Elementary School Press 9:00 a.m. 'til 5:00 p.m. For all your professional printing needs!
