Christopher Moiley Home and School: Vital Links "Si l by LILY ESKELSEN President, Utah Education Association Teachers and parents share miles and miles of common ground. Parents areachild's first teachers. Teachers must use basis parenting skills to accomplish their tasks. We share the joys and the pride and the hopes for ourchildrcn'saccomplishinents.but we may also share responsibility for the development of a serious and growing problem. Do these words sound familiar? "That's no fair." "It's not my fault." "I just forgot." "It was an accident." I'm not suggesting t3i.u there are not valid reasons or a child to be in some sort of trouble. Hie problem occurs when we allow the excuse, valid or not, to relieve the child from having to find a solution to the situation. When we see the child as victim and ourselves as rescuer, we fail to develop (lie essential skills that will mean so much to that child as an adult. When Jan spills her milk, when Kyle hasn'tstudiedforthe test, when a borrowed toy is broken, we rush in with a lecture on being more responsible. Then we tell them exactly how to solve the problem, or worse yet, we take control of the situation and clean up, fix, pay for, or complete whatever it was that had been the topic of our lecture. You know. The one on being responsible. It is so easy to see our children as victims of classrooms, peer pressure, or a learning disability. It's not easy to see them as victims of our own love and concern. When a child has a problem, uM him you know he is capable of finding his solution. Psise him for the maturity in taking control, and let him know you're there to help when he has made a decision. We won't always be available, watching on the shore, ready to jump in and rescue. Although it takes time to develop the skills, we've got to teach them how to swim so that when they're in over their heads, they can find the way to safety all by themselves. 12.5-H- with Commercial engine 44-i- n. triple-blad- on spreaders... In fact the first post office was named Kaintuck, ignoring the name of Rexburg. Even the early maps listed Kaintuck. It was in 1893 that Rexburg citizens requested the Post Office department to appoint Thomas E. Bassctt postmaster of the officially named Rexburg Post Office. In her book, This Side of the Mountains, Janet Thomas wrote "There were three main forces that determined many of southeastern Idaho town names. They were the railroad, the United States Post Office, and the Mormon Church." Thomas also pointed out that the name "Idaho" is a word without meaning. Noted Idaho historian, Merle W. Wells, aftcrsifting through many and sundry "explanations of where 'Idaho' originated (concluded that) 'Idaho' is a word coined by a group of miners in what is known today as Colorado." Rexburg, like many other Mormon Idaho settlements, has preserved excellent examples of distinctive Mormon Church architecture. The booklet Idaho, An Illustrated History, by the Idaho State Historical Society states, "This Italianate Rexburg tabernacle is an imposing example of Mormon building using local basaltic material." Mormon building projects produced community pride buildings which have had a strong impact on the architectural heritage of Idaho. Rexburg, settled in 1883 by a group of young Mormons out of Utah's Cache Valley, was named for Thomas E. Ricks, an original pioneer.
