When is a can of bug give one of our ladies a call and we spray enough and when do you need will be glad to pick it up professional help? According to Howard Deer, Utah State Extension " University pesticide coordinator, first you need to know if you have the type of bug that infests or just the type that shows up from time to time. Unless you are an entomologist, identifying bugs can be difficult. Deer says you must capture a specimen. It doesn't need to be alive, but try not to bring one in that looks like a road kilL Next, take your little captive to a USU County Extension agent. The agent may be able to identify the bug on the spot and recommend what action to take. If not, he says the agent can send the specimen to the pest identification clinic at USU. Specialists at the clinic will identify the pest and send the results to the county agent. Planting a grain nurse crop along with new alfalfa stands may cut future alfalfa yields, says Steve Dewey, Utah State University Extension weed specialist. "One of the keys to successful alfalfa establishment is to provide a environnearly competition-fre- e ment during the first several weeks of emergence and growth," says Dewey. "From a competitive standpoint, g planting a like species grain along with your alfalfa is not much different from planting grassy weeds.". Dewey says growers often plant a nurse grain crop to produce an economic crop yield the first season. But he says a alfalfa crop will produce pure-stan- d good economic returns the first year. "Studies have shown that a nurse grain crop actually costs the grower money in the form of lower .'alfalfa yields in later years," he I says. ; A nurse crop may be useful on windblown sands or severly crusted soils, but Dewey says such instance are rare. . A field study conducted at USU "last summer compared alfalfa .established with and without the influence of an oat nurse crop. The nurse crop plot yielded more total hay per acre than the plot without a nurse crop, but much less alfalfa per acre. Crude protein in the pure alfalfa stand was 815 pounds per acre compared with 782 pounds in the nurse crop field. Based on Utah market prices for alfalfa and oat hay, the value of the pure alfalfa stand was $136.40 per acre compared with $123.78 per acre for the nurse crop stand. Dewey says the greatest disadvantage of the nurse crop was seen last fall in the form of spotty, thin stands of alfalfa in each of the nurse ' crop plots. Surviving alfalfa plants were smaller and appeared less vigorous, opening the way for future weed invasion, he says. "The impact of establishing this alfalfa stand with a nurse crop will likely be expressed over several years in the form of lower alfalfa yields, poorer quality and weedy hay and shortened stand life", Dewey says. quick-emergin- By Dennis BVIattie's well-manag- ? Makes about 5 cups meat mixture and 4 cups rice or six servings If it is the type of pest that infests, Deer says the agent should be able to recommend a proper control method. This may be a method or hiring a professional service. He says if it is the type of bug that is just passing through, little if anything need be done. If a method is recommended, be especially careful to read and follow all label instructions, Deer cautions. If the agent recommends hiring a professional pest control service, be sure to shop around before making a decision. Next week's column will list some specific questions to ask when shopping for a pest control service. We're Celebrating With Big Savings For You! Mr. Hawkes said. "Our Business and Industry program was created primarily to provide jobs in smaller towns and rural communities.
