I realize that these subjects have been covered many times before, but as time progresses, statistics and figures change. Each year, this information is updated to give us the most current facts available. WHAT IS ALCOHOLISM: Alcohol by the effects of its very content, instantly and rapidly affects every organ in the body from the moment the first drink is taken. There is a difference between a social drinker and a person with the disease of alcoholism. A social drinker can stopan alcoholic can not. Alcoholism is a progressive disease. Although patterns and some symptoms can vary, alcoholics progress through the basic stages of why and when they consume alcohol. The disease leads to uncontrollable drinking habits. No single cause has been pinpointed, although heredity and physiological factors are thought to play a role. Addiction or dependence, is marked by the need to increase doses to produce the desired effect. The body becomes dependent upon alcohol to function normally. Treatment is possible, although there is no miracle cure. The first step is to admit a problem exists and for the individual to want and accept the need for help. Medical help and counseling are available from a number of different sources. Research has shown that by the age of six or seven, children have already developed a knowledge of alcohol and determined their attitudes about alcohol and its use. Therefore, it is important to provide information about alcohol and drinking to parents to enable them to help their children make responsible decisions about alcohol. NEXT WEEK: Questions you can ask yourself, and guidelines to help parents determine if there is a teenager in your home who might have an alcohol problem. DID YOU KNOW? It is estimated by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism that 19 percent of adolescents between the years of age, or 3.3 ages of MILLION teenagers are alcoholics? 14-1- 7 Scholarships FM 95 PROPOSAL If you need only a few drops of lemon juice, prick one end with a fork and squeeze the desired amount.
