Wildlife Every year, officers and game bioloists saddle up with area sportsmen to ride the back country and see how the deer and elk are getting along. They look at range conditions and check for winter mortality, critical factors in big game management. Range rides are the first step in the long process of surveys and reports involved in formulating recommendations for the fall big game hunts. Open public meetings of the Board of Big Game Control in June cap the long process of setting the rules and regulations. Range rides take place throughout the state, and the public is encouraged to participate in the annual outings. The rides provide a good opportunity to watch and often help game biologists gather the technical information necessary to make the right recommendations to the Board of Big Game Control.
