Show TKE BEAVER PRESS - PAGE MAR. 17, 1983 6 better get busy, finish on our and way get packing before we got cold feet and backed out. I began thinking of the basketball games I was going to miss. I went up to Western Auto to get a few odds and ends and met my good friend Ed Simco. When he found I was taking a little trip he conned me into writing it up when I returned, so if you can read my tripe, here's to you Ed. I went into Bradshaw Auto Parts and there was Dick Davis. He said he and Connie Grimshaw and wives were heading for Quartzsite, Arizona for the big rock and gem show. They have been going for several years. Anyway, being a rock hound, rocks was the magic word. I hadn't even thought about it before, but I told him we'd probably see him there. I didn't know there was going to be 150,000 other people there. Op Our Way By Louis Lessing After several months of being snowbound 1 began getting cabin fever and dreaming of the sunny southland., It seemed like a good idea to pack up the old camper and go where Myrl and I could get the frozen bones thawed out. We've always had visions of doing this but never did quite get around to it. W.e decided that this time we would take a leisurely trip, take time to visit friends and relatives and have no definite schedule to meet, and no particular destination. This time I was going to take daily notes of things of interest in case I decided to write about the trip which I did, and wouldn't you know it, near the end of the trip we were ripped off in Palm Springs and among the things taken was my new travel note book that the kids gave me for Christmas, so this little column will have to be strictly from a very bad memory. The first order of business was to get the old camper, which had been on blocks for months, back on my old, beat-uDodge. This was no easy task, but after several broken cables and much profanity the job was I don't think I'll evifer remove it again. Ithe next task was to load it wilh more clothes than you could ever hope to wear during a months tour, which was the time we told our kids we were going to be gone. 'Ha', they laughed, 'you'll get homesick and be back in a week.' Not so. Next, we packed a few vittles to keep the wolf from the door and we were in business. I used the fact that I had contracted a hacking cough, which seemed to hang on, as an excuse to head for Arizona. (You know how they always used to advise the old timers to go to Arizona for their health). At this point we nearly had Leonard and Mima Erickson talked into hopping in their camper and going with us. However, old Len had just had two enormous steers murdered, so had to stay home and take care of them. We had been told many times that it was just as cheap to travel as to stay home, as you had to eat at home anyway and the only expense was the gas. Not so. Wishful thinking. Anyway, we figured we'd toward the south and were on our way once more. We made a short stop at Cedar City to tell my sister, Bertha Jones and her husband Lanoir what we were up to just in case I got clobbered on one of those busy freeways. It was snowing now and we figured we had picked the right time to be leaving the frigid homeland. As we dropped over the Black Ridge the sun was shining. Already I felt better. Since this was to be a leisurely trip we detoured into Washington to visit with two of Myrls nephews, the Lister boys and their families. They were getting ready to plant their gardens and we've been shovelling snow. We passed St. George and always enjoy seeing the white Temple glistening in the sun. As Bloomington came into view I was amazed at the growth that has taken place there. I was particularly interested as our son Dale was working for Terracor in the early development stages and helped get it started. It's always a thrill to go through the Virgin River Canyon and see the vast amount of drilling it took to make the cut and the enormous bridges that were necessary to cross the river at many places. As we crossed the desert and neared Las Vegas we decided that rather than buck the five o'clock traffic of that city we would by pass it and take the short cut to Boulder City. That proved to be some more wishful thinking. The Dinner Served 4 to 10p.rn.Sun. thru Fri. Saturday, 4 to 9 p.m. several trips to Goodsprings, Nevada, south of Las Vegas and to Vanderbilt, California. One trip was made with pack horses and two of his pals. They ran out of food and had to barter with the Indians who weren't too friendly. Also, at the time, the desert was full of renegade whites who would rob you at the drop of a hat. It is now a fair sized town. It was nearly sundown so Boulder City seemed a great place to stay for the night. Boulder City is so new, clean and fresh that it is very inviting. It too has grown to a fair sized city. I remember when the diversion tunnel was being built to divert the river so that the dam could be started, Boulder City consisted of a few trees and half a dozen houses situated in a barren desert. Now it's a different story, full of beautiful homes handsomely landscaped with lawns, flowers and trees. Also the people are very friendly. We made many trips to the dam while it was being constructed and were thrilled to see John Brinkerhoff, Lamar Pearce and Alton . .. advertisers for The Beaver Press. If you don't see a frequent or weekly ad by your favorite merchant then he isn't helping to support your local paper to bring you January the 31st we pointed the old Dodge p ' As we passed Henderson, again I was startled by the highway and everyone in a big hurry. One thing I've noticed on the Nevada highways is the little bumps implanted along the center line to notify you when you wander a bit. But who needs them when you have a wife to punch you in the ribs the second you veer an inch from the straight and narrow? I was impressed by the amount of building that has taken place in recent years on the highway between Las Vegas and Boulder City. You wonder how they can all keep in operation. I recall that when the Boulder Dam was first started this stretch was nothing but desert. My sister had about a dozen lots at the time along the highway and let them go for taxes because she couldn't foresee the Wanted Black, all good friends of mine, working on the high cables above the dam. No amount of money would get me up there. The next morning after a restful night we were on the highway heading for Searchlight, Nevada. Searchlight is practically an old ghost mining town, but someone had the foresight to construct a king sized combination casino and cafe. It seems to be in the right location to snare hundreds of tourists. I took Myrl in but put blinders on her as she seems to have a strange fascination for the one armed bandits. Every time I go to Searchlight I am reminded of my father telling me of when he was a young man he rode horseback all alone from Minersville, Utah, to Searchlight to work the gold mines.
