Dairy Herd Improvement As. sociations are growing in Utah, says Lyman H. Rich, Utah State Extension dairyman. There are now more than 10,000 dairy cows about 9 percent of the total enrolled in these associations in Utah. There are 20 district units covering 17 counties, and 20 testers are employed in these opera, tlons, taking samples, weights of milk, and the field work that goes with the improvement work. In a recent month 682 cows produced over 50 pounds of fat, and 1421 produced over 40 pounds. Of the 653 herds tested, 633 fed grain. Only 20 herds in these associations feed only roughage. There were 158 cows culled during this same month. At present the 653 herds on test are maintaining 93 registered dairy sires. Only 19 grade bulls are being used by dairymen in all associations in the state. Not quite 12 years. The number of cows in associations now is quite a contrast to the month of November, 1936, when State Dairy Herd Improve, ment reports began. There were then five associations and four supervisors testing 175 herds with 2459 cows. The program now is four times the size it was then. Dairy herd Improvement gives the dairymen monthly and year, ly productions of their herds and individual cows. With these monthly tests cows are fed according to production. When cows reach a certain low standard they are culled out of the herd and go to the butcher. These records, maintained over the years, gives the dairyman in. formation and with it he can more profitably manage his herd. Some herds have had only a 240 or 250 pound average to with and later reached a 400 or productive level At present milk prices, such an increase means doubling the in. coruo from the dairy enterprise" Dairy herd improvement work is widely scattered over the state Dairymen are finding that even though it costs about 35 to 40 cents per cow per month, it pays to test. be-gi- 500-poun- I J d n -- ilinui .
