Larnoine Cowley, Don Elwell, Forrest Buchanan. the Fire Department was called to extinguish a fire in the upstairs apartment of the Heitz and Winzeler building next to the Mid- land Hotel. According to the report given, the fire apparently started in a clothes closet near the kitchen stove. Whether the stove or matches started the fire ia not known. The apartment waa occupied by the family of Roy Dawson, and after the alarm was sounded Ray Ashe raft succeeded in bringing the smaller children down stairs before the smoke became too heavy. The extent of the damage is not known at present. The downstairs of the building is unoccupied. OAKLAND POST OF A3IEUICAX LEGION' TO SPONSOR DOG KACE Under the sponsorship of the Garland Post of the American Legion, a dog race will be held Saturday, February 12th (if there is any snow left). Entries are open to the registered Scouts of the Garland Ward, and firsc, second and third prizes will be awarded for the fastest time. Prizes will also be given to the smartest dog and to the dog that can pull the most. The race is scheduled to start at 2:00 p. m. At the Methodist Church, no Court of Honor is planned, as one was hekl a shoit time ago. However, a social honoring the boys and their Dads will be held at the church Tuesday evening. The traditional Scout window display will not be made this year, as the boys of the troop are putting their entire effort toward the waste paper drive. A ceremony is also planned to honor the older members of the troop who are in the armed forces of the country, telling of their activities and where they are located. Edgar Winchester is scoutmaster of the troop, with Rev. Reginald Goff as chairman of the committee, with the following members of the troop committee: Eli Winzeler, Elmer Winzeler, L. G. Rose, Phil Johnson, and Ernest Woodward. GARLAND WARD The Garland Troop has outlined a program of activity for the week - Hospital News METHODIST CHURCH ' A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John R. Evans, January 30th. Emil Eggli underwent a major operation for acute appendicitis on January 29th. His condition is reported as good. Leo Stokes ia getting long nicely after undergoing a major operation, Elvan Korth is improving after medical attention for the past week. The boys and dads will be given a supper in the evening after the dog races. Andreason, of Bear River City, and Charles V. Brough, son of Mrs. Albert Thompson and husband of Lucile Brough of Tremonton, have been reported as members of the B aBttery, 31st Battalion, 6th training regiment of the Field Artillery Replacement Training Center at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where they will receive their 17 week basic training.
