Whitney Floyd, extension forester at the Utah State foreAgricultural college and chief state. this warden for ster-fire In pointing out the Importance of removing fire hazards, professor Floyd reports that farm fires destroyed between $200,000,000 and $225,000,000 worth of property last year. In addition approximately 300,000 lives were lost in rural fires "Statistics show that four farm fires were burning every hour of every day in this country last " year," he adds. . As measures to prevent farm fires this year, Professor Floyd suggests building a fire proof ash pit for burning of rubbish, and around constructing farm buildings and around wood-lot- s and windbreaks. Another suggestion is to clean the roofs of all buildings and free them of inflamable litter. Also chimneys should be inspected, and attics cleaned out. Professor Floyd recommends repairing fire fighting equipment and getting it in working condition now before the dry season. Shovels, hoes, rakes and water buckets should be available and ready for use on a moment's notice. The extension forester stresses that fire prevention and precautions are especially important this year, since we need all the food and fiber we can produce and since there is a shortage of man- - av Mrs. Ilnr-- rv.
