G. F. Knowlton, associate entomologist at the Utah agricultural college experiment station. Furthermore, control measures should not be delayed too long, Dr. Knowlton says. At least 700 tons of bait will be needed in the state- this year. Of that amount, one hundred tons is now on hand for control operations. Counties have signified a need for at least 51G tons already. Dr. KnovJton says, pointing out that a serious grasshopper year seems inevitable unless weather conditions seriously affect the hatch this year. Poison bait should be used as the principal control measure in the 1938 grasshopper campaign, according to Dr. Knowlton. It has proved effective he points out, when it is scattered at the hatching grounds to kill the young grasshoppers before they disperse. Early season control is urged, since it requires less material and la bor, lessens the damage of early sea son grasshopper feeding, and limits the area to be controlled. the point of beginning, and containing 28.50 acres, more or less.
