Bigler By 4 It has said that the only mountains in the world that look as mountains should look are the This range is included in Grand Teton National park in western Wyoming, one of the newest of the national parks of the United States, and an ideal vacation-lan- d directly accessible over the Union Pacific Railroad and its connections. The extraordinary thrill that the traveler receives when first he sees g crests these sharp, perhaps exceeds that produced by any other mountains in America. They seem to rise as sheer precipices from the shores of Jackson Lake, without any gradual incline to lessen the conpintrast between their nacles and the level plain. Along the eastern base of the Teton range, protected by a heavy forest, are seven lakes of Alpine grandeur, of which six lie within the park boundary. This mountain massing is one of the noblest in the world, and seen from the north resembles a colossal cathedral, of which the Grand Teton itself forms the central spire. From the south arid east the view of this main peak is strikingly similar to that of the Matterhorn of the Alps. Most of the range is lifted above timber line into the realm of perpetual snow. Grand Teton National pary and the adjacent country have two distinct phases, one scenic, the other historic. Exquisite lakes nestle in the forests at the foot of the Tetons, mirroring the high peaks in their quiet waters. Bordering the park on the east is Jackson Hole which teems with historical interest and romance. In pioneer days this region was famous as a hunting ground and as a hiding place for the hunted. Fugatives from the law found sanctuary in its fastnesses, and many a border romance was woven around it. Today It is dotted with peaceful dude ranches, and only the memory of the turbulent days remains. Dude ranches are a typically west ern American institution. The dude ranch is the cattle ranch of yesterday, made comfortable for those who love the great and its pleasures of horseback riding, fishing, hunting, hiking and mountain climbing. Visitors or vacation guests at the ranches are referred to as "dudes," hence the name. In the west every farm is a "ranch," and they vary in size from the small ranch to five or ten thousand acres and in the case of some of the stock and grain ranches, even larger. It is not difficult to enumerate the lakes and mountains of the park, to describe the accomodations that are offered the traveler. But the visitor gains another impression that is less easy to describe a flavor of the old days when the Jackson Hole country was the source of outlaw raids on the region around. Perhaps it may come from the glimpse of a pistol swinging at the hip of a ranches, or a Winchester in a saddle scabbard. Their only use today is to help rid the ranches of coyotes, but the reflection of other days nevertheless remains. been Te-ton- s. glacier-bearin- Vere Johnson, year old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A.
