A GROUP Religious Forces in Ogden Have Unity By JOHN EDWARD CARVER The steady normal growth of Ogden as a live industrial and commercial center is matched by the continued development of the many religious organizations serving the varied spiritual desires of a cosmopolitan city. From the first beginnings of the growth of Ogden as a center of influence, the churches of the city have been marked by a unity of spirit that has been a distinct factor in the development of the community life. This has been accomplished by an emphasis upon the points upon which there is agreement rather than upon the conceptions of religious belief wherein there is variance. Ogden, as a city, owes much to this harmonious religious life. It has made possible the strength of a united community, and by the hearty of religious groups in things and causes that matter most, Ogden, as a city, has been enabled to present a united force in attaining desired ends. The unity of the religious forces of Ogden have enabled the local community to advance also along the lines of social and moral standards. Through the interlocking of the members in civic and social club life and activities the community has found a voice for trends of municipal betterment. In these clubs religious lines have been so forgotten that an united Ogden spirit is dominant. The same has been true of commercial and political endeavors. From time to time as need has arisen the moral trend has been supported by a united religious interest. This has greatly strengthened, not only the causes for which support was needed, but also has reacted most favorably to the advantage of the individual churches as As in a cord the various well. threads, so weak alone, become strong when united together, so the many creeds and sects of this city have found their greatest strength in union for desired ends. The religious leaders of the city have strengthened this to their members an spirit by-givi- 37 !.': 4 example of this fraternal spirit and the effect has borne fruit in the peace and progress of the city. The church life of Ogden naturally falls into three divisions of thought. Of these, the following of the Church of Latter-da- y Saints leads in membership and influence. A distinct progress has been accomplished by the membership of this church along the line of new and admirably equipped church buildings. The past two years has seen some of the wards erecting new houses of worship which, with their provision for recreational activities advantageously housed in modern adjoining amusement structures, will equal religious opportunities found in much larger cities. In the erection of these new chapels and ward buildings, artistic effect has been combined with utility of purpose. The beauty and spacious convenience of these new edifices tells a story of local prosperity that is exceptional. It is the aim of this church to provide in each religious ward of the city the best possible advantages for their membership of all ages. The wards have been divided that each section of the city will have it's own local spiritual and recreational center. Into this advance building program the individual members have entered most zealously and given their leaders loyal support. This church has sponsored also the two leading humanitarian institutions of Ogden. The Thomas D. Dee Memorial hospital is probably the most outstanding memorial to a civic leader in the state. This worthy institution has ever received the support, not only of Saints membership, the Latter-da- y entire of the but community The well. as complete facilities for physical rebuilding as found in this building is a testimonial to the unselfsh spirit of it's founders. Weber college, established by those of the faith of thi3 church, continues to expand it's usefulness through the enlarging number of students seeking learning in it's sereral departments. The work of the St. Joseph Catholic church has ever been of an outstanding nature in Ogden. The third group of religious organizations combine the several organizations of the Christian, Christian Scientists, Congregational, Baptist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, Seventh Day Advent Salvation Army, Volunteers of America, Presbyterian and several organizations of smaller groups who are, nevertheless, doing efficient service to benefit mankind. There is also a numbr of churches ministering to distinct groups. Of these the Japanese Evangelical, and the two organizations for colored citizens are doing efficient work. Mission work in Ogden is being carried on by lay workers in other organizations quite successfully. Some of these organizations have more than one field of activity. The Episcopalian church conducts services in Plain City. The Baptist membership sponsors a Sunday school department in West Ogden, and the Presbyterians maintain a second organization in the Central Park fellowship in the southern portion of the city. These institutions carry forward the usual forms of religious effort with a degree of success as shown in their reports to be fully in step with the prosperity of the community. The Sunday school work is by the nature of the citizenry an outstanding one. The reports from the Ogden churches in this line of religious work have been exceptional. BECKER President Ogden's business men have long since realized that Ogden cannot grow out of proportion to the growth of her trade territory. This well established principal in all centers of agricultural territory presents the problem: What can these centers do to stimulate growth and activity in the trade area of such communities or centers? The business men of Ogden, through their chamber of commerce, have in a very definite organized way, assisted developments proposed throughout the intermountain country by active participation financially and morally. This activity has been the result of response to invitation from communities effected or through invitation on the part of Ogden proper. Communities within Ogden's trade territory seldom stage community events that do not receive the active support of the Ogden chamber of comerce through a delegation of Ogden's business men ready to assist and willing to enter into the. spirit of the occasion. The business men of this city welcome the opportunity to be of service to any and all communities within her trade territory. Annually, the Ogden chamber of commerce sends a good-widelegation into some sections of the intermountain country, preaching the prin ll Wff-- ' -- t pleted expensive improvements, a new organ has been installed and adjoining property secured for new needed facilities. Ogden has found it very effective to work in close harmony with the farm bureau, the county agents and the entire extension departments of the State Agricultural college in the encouragement of the production of better livestock and increased efficiency in agricultural development. Agriculturally, Ogden has developed institutions fundamentally and entirely for the purpose of offering marketing and grading facilities for the livestock and agricultural products intermounin the produced tain region. Reference is made in this case to the stockyards, packing plants and the great grain, milling and feed industry. Ogden's unselfish attitude has been very definitely expressed in her efforts and accomplishments in .supporting the principal of good roads in rural communities. It has been the program of the good roads committee to urge development of roads into the farming sections without consideration to the direct affect such roads may have on Ogden proper. Practically all sections of Weber county roads, are topped with making for the pleasure and satisfaction of those who are the fundamental foundation of the nation, namely, the farmer. The Ogdon chamber of commerce is proud tof her record in responding to calls from sections in the intermountain country and the Pacific coast Industries and communities in need of support from the Ogden chamber of commerce have always received careful consideration and investigation, and if the requests crit the support of this chamber of commerce, it is alv ways forthcoming. In addition to the interest shown in the development of the intermountain country, the Ogden chamber of commerce has a very definite policy in dealing with community development, industrial develop ment and retail development. The industrial division of the chamber of commerce is very active in the promotion of a better understanding between the retail distributing interests of this community and the industrial activities. They are developing a plan for a better understanding between employes and managers, with a view of increasing the cooperation that must exist between these interests in order that development may be consistent and progressive. The industrial division has made a rather complete industrial survey of Ogden, which is used aa a basis for future development, and for the purpose of a thorough understanding of Ogden's position commercially industrially, and civically. The retail merchants division of the chamber of commerce has gone a long way in developing a spirit of cooperation among the retail distributing interests. Many event? are outlined and brought to a successful conclusion on a cooperative plan. ' Their unselfish, democratic and cooperative attitude, coupled with their desire to lend a helping hand to all interests within the intermountain country, surely spells success and the future development of Ogden. 4f; feiHv" mljff r-- r inter-dependen- '. , ST.
