This figure was more than double the number of calls which were answered in 1947. Delbert Townsend, chief of the volunteers, estimated the total loss was about $8,000. This was also in excess of 1947. There were 73 grass fires and 22 house fires during the year with other calls breaking down as fol- lows; ambulance, 17; chicken coop fires, 9; automobiles, 15; cafes, 2; business establishments, 2; tela-phopoles, 7; and hospital fires, 1.
