Junior Golf Tournament A Junior Golf Tournament was held at the Canyon Breeze Golf Course August 9, 1976. All first place winners received $4 credit at the pro shop. All other entrants in the tournament received $2 credit and were given a golf ball. The Men's Association paid the entrants fees. Punch and cookies were served by some of the ladies in the association. Elva Hodges Named to Enjoy Annual Campout USCSC Board By Melanie Thompson 4-H'- ers camp was held on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of August at Kents Lake. Our day began with the first meeting which was the elections. Many people were elected to the various committees and offices. Those elected are: Mayor - Cindy Carter. Denise Program Committee: Bradshaw Lisa .Carter, and Witney Patterson. Log Sawing Committee (10-1- 2 year olds) Tara Gale. Log sawing committee (13-1year olds) Melanie Thompson and Paige Gale. Flag Raising Committee: Pat Sulivan, Wendy Carter and Nanette Black. Clean Camp Committee : Kris-te- n Walbeck, Kristy Kiesel, and Nanette Dalton. There was alot of fun and games alw ays going on. The more games we had the more winners we got. Winners were: Target Shooting (1 minute contest) 1st Jimmie Carter, Donny Roberts. August 4th seventy-fiv- e senior citizens attended the First On Annual District 5 Convention of the Utah State Coalition of Senior Citizens, which was held at dixie Mobile Estates Club House in St. George, Ut. Representatives from each of the District 5 counties, Beaver, Iron, Garfield, Washing ton and Kane, were ia; attendance. One of the issues,, of considerable concern to those in attendance was the proposed elecincrease in California-Pacifi- c tric rates to residents of Washington and Iron Counties. The group felt that it is important for persons concerned about the proposed 50 increase to attend the Public Service Commission hearings to be held in Cedar City August 10th and Uth beginning at 10 a.m. in the Recital Hall of Southern Utah State College. Other areas of discussion includ- '"- -- 4 ed: mandatory retirement, age discrimination, inflation as it effects senior citizens and the need for legal services for senior citizens. According to USCSC Board "The Ruth MeGee, Coalition has been active in fighting escalating utility rates and attempting to get a statewide legal services program for the elderly. McGarry died July 30. 1976 in a Salt Lake hospital of causes incident to age. She was born May II. 1898 to Robinson Daniel and Helena Beck. Her parents died while she was very young. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Low. She married John McGarry They had one son. Daniel B. McGarry. who died in 1954. She spent her early years in She graduated from Beaver. Roland Hall Girls School and studied music in Los Angeles, Calif. She was very generous w ith her talents singing for funerals, patriotic and church meetings. She taught piano and voice lessons to many young people. of the She was President American Legion Auxiliary, President of B.P.W. Club. Vice president of the State American Legion Auxiliary and chairman of the Sw imming Pool Committee. She is survived by many friends and cousins of the Beck and Robinson families. She attended S.U.S.C. Gary graduated from Beaver High in 1975. He was active in in bassports, selected ketball, football and baseball. They spent a day visiting historical spots in Santa Fe including the oldest church in the United States which is still in use. On their return trip they visited points of interest including Colo., Mesa Verde National Park and Arches National Monument. They report the tourists r were throughout the Mesa Verde Park. Mrs. Melvin (Becky) Walker visited with her sisters and brother, Linda Jill, Wendy and William, at her sisters home in Salt Lake City. Wendy is going to the Church College of Hawaii. Clayton, pupil transportation training officer for the Utah State Board of Education, the current class is one of the largest in the history of the program, which requires 24 hours of special training for every driver of a school bus in the state. Nine of the 55 enrolled are omentheJargest number ever to enroll in aingle course, said Mr. Clayton. The course began Wednesday at Utah Tech, continues today and concludes Friday. It is sponsored by the Utah Tech Division of Continuing Education of which Dr. Roger H. Plothow is director. Utah Tech's entire faculty of professional truck driver and driver training and improvement programs is being utilized. Those taking the course are getting training in Utah Tech's driver-traine- r simulators plus actual experience in a school bus. r Safety, techniques, responsibilities and other, phases are being featured. Each driver r has already had a training program in his or her own school district, and will get another eight hours in their districts following the Utah Tech course. They will also receive for the first time the new school bus driver handbook prepared by the pupil transportation division of the Utah State Board of F.ducaton. School districts represented among the 55 drivers taking the course include Alpine. Box Elder, Beaver, Cache County. Carbon County. Davis County, Emery County, Grand. Kane, Murray, Nebo.
