Where fertilizer is applied, noncorrosive fittings and nozzles must be used. Furthermore, the sprinkler system should be flushed out thoroughly after the fertilizer has been applied. When fertilizer is added 5. to an irrigation stream, provision should be made for uniform discharge of the fertilizer into the stream and thorough mixing with the water. 6. In the case of nitrogen fertilizer, there can be large losses of ammonia into the air as agas. This is particularly time when Anhydrous ammonia or Aqua ammonia are used. Nitrogen losses can be minimized by limiting the amount of fertilizer applied and by usingmaterials that tend to decrease the pH in the water. These include ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate. 7. Where fertilizers are added directly to Irrigation water, care should be taken to prevent run-o- ff from the lower end of the fields. Not only will valuable fertilizer be lost in the run-of- f, but it also can contribute to stream pollution. If these conditions are met satisfactorily, fanners may benefit from applying the fertilizer in their irrigation water either in or late in the season instead of applying aside-dressiof fertilizer, Dr. Qiristensen said. nivnrinii nmifti ifitiiuiiiiiun orcuiiu. The two plants, representing an investment of more than $8 million and employment for 38 people, are the latest and most sophisticated step in the company's mineral beneficiation complex. Kennecott's Utah Copper Division concentrators heretofore recovered nearly 90 percent of all copper mineral values in approximately 112,000 tons of Bingham Canyon ore daily. With declining mineral values and high volume of ore, the elusive 10 percent loomed important indeed. Metallurgists knew that small amounts of mineral values were escaping to the tailing pond because of interference in the flotation process from very fine particles. They reasoned that if these particles were removed, the remaining coarse sands containing mineral values could be O0ATO SOUP Iii'K DEODORANT n, tory for this purpose. 3. There should be no formation of precipitates in the water when the fertilizer is added. Because many of the irrigation streams in Utah contain hard water, lime may precipitate unless precautions are taken to prevent it. This could be a major problem where fertilizer is applied through sprinkler sy4. ASSORTED DIAL ation water.
