Show enver VOLUME 68, NUMBER 3 UTAH 84713, THURSDAY, JANUARY 21, 1971 BEAVER Stake Conference January 30 and 31 Bishop Victor L. Brown, Counselor In the BT GEORGE Second Bruno, the young exchange student from Brazil who living with our family for a while, had his first encounter with police American style the other night. After supper he felt he would like to go for a walk. Obtaining Dorothy's permission, he set forth to do so. Not being present at the time, here is his description of what happened (Since a considerable part of his vocabulary is made up of finger movements, I will include them). "I walking (two fingers describe legs walking) when car comes, passes slow m comes again slow to Car turns go by stops zong (hands show sudden turn, indicate car comes close to leg and Bruno steps back away. "Policeeman he say, 'what your name, where you live?' "I tell him my name is Bruno Aroeira, I live in Beaver with Rich (pronounced Reish) family. "Policeeman shine lamp on me from shoes to head (complete with hand motions indicating man holding a flashlight shining it up and down) then, with appropriate" gestures, indicate policeman taking microphone and talking over radio. Information: In Brazil, policemen are not friends of students, in fact at least according to Bruno, there is a definite understanding gap. Brazilian students have little if anything to do with policemen and expect only bad to come from any encounter with the law. "Policeeman say, 'Get in the car!' "I say, no, I walk. "Policeeman say, 'get in the car.'- I say, no, I walk, thank you, goodbye. is z, "Is not permitted to walk in Beaver?" With my inability to speak Portugese and Bruno's trouble with English, it is a little difficult to explain that although it is done very little, it is quite all right to walk in Beaver. Explaining action of local policeeman, however, is more complicated. Each time I think I'm getting it across that policemen are not to be feared but should be looked to for help, Bruno explains again that in Brazil is not so. Policemen there start and end conversation with students with club on student head. Church by Thorpe Waddlngham The first week of the 39th Session of the Utah State Legislature is now history. Paul gave a copy to his Church Information Service Bulletin for January, 1971 which has this information. "Most delinquents, so the psychologists tell us, got their start on the wrong path before school age. Their behavior patterns show signs of being warped. Home influences, therefore, transcend every other factor because in the early and impressionable years the child is learning to be selfish or unselfish, to choose between right and wrong, to know the difference between justice and injustice, to consider the rights of others and to practice tolerance and fair play.
