Mice problems in Utah orchards may not be such a problem any more, according to Grant Esplin, USU Extension Agent He said that orchardists will soon have advantage of a new rodenticide called "Prolin", made by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. warfarin and "Prolin" (0.5 is an .05 sulfaquinoxaline) The Research anticoagulant. Foundation has mixed it with grain, and glue it to the inside of paper tubes to be used as bait stations. The Extension Service in the Columbia Basin of Washington did initial testing of the product Tests were made under snow cover. During that period mice usually do most damage to trees However, after three and one-ha- lf months of snow cover it was observed that none of the trees had been damaged by mice. tubes have These bait-line- d some special adrviayitages: 1lho, tubes themselves provide waterproof, disposable bait stations; the tubes are d and require no additional preparation by the user; they are safe for the handler and for predatory animals; they are light in weight and therefore are easily carried by workers and easily placed; they ar so shaped that they apparently provoke no suspicions in mice In fact, mice were found taking shelter or even nesting inside while consuming the walls of the paper tubes. Since the outer surface is water repellent, the treated grain is protected from moisture of rain or snow. Most important, Prolin tubes have a margin of safety over some other toxicants used by orchardists. water-repella- nt pre-fille- The Prolin tubes will be avail able in Utah about the first of March, 1970.
