That tendency is sometimes fatal. Drowning of an boy in a backed behind an old Btagnant pond up county dump in Sandy has brought the grim results of official and private oversight to the fore. While details of the Sandy tragedy are fresh in mind a drive should be launched to discover and eliminate similar death traps. Because of the geology of the., Salt Lake Valley it is comaen. during psrioda of high water table for trees far from creeks and rivers to be visited by rising water. The water may be no nor thm a nuisance in relatively flat country but when it seeps into an abandoned bvfld ing's cellar or into a ravine or other depression it becomes a hazard. Small children, those least able to take care of themselves, are naturally attracted to bodies of water. They make no distinction between shallow and deep ponds or between dirty and clean ones. Water is imply an irresistible source of delight. But aU too often it is also a magnet of death. Stagnant pools also are a health menace sad a breeding place for mosquitoes. There is every reason for seeking them Oat and draining thsm or otherwise lessening their danger potential Cooperation in this task should be forthcoming from the state and the various municipalities in the valley but the main responsibility for finding and eliminating the water hazards must fall upon the county. If more time is last more lives will be, too. Little League Little League leader at the close of the first round of play is the Poonderosa Cafe team coached by Clair McMullin and Mart Hutchlngs.
