Show Hastings. Nebraska and has held many church positions In Ward and Stake.. Happy Birthday! Lois. Happy birthday wishes are extended to Mr. Morrell Warr this week. Mr. Warr was employed at the Shepherd and Biooklawn Creamery for 23 years and has been a farmer and dairyman for most of his life. He has been an active member of the church, a member of the City Council and a member of the Beaver Coun ty School Board. Happy Birthday! Mr. Warr. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Jones spent a week vacationing in California and Arizona. Grand ma Hazel Stapley was baby si Iter for the travelers. Allen Blackner spent several days in the Cedar Hospital but is feeling much better. There has been lots of sickness in icown the past couple of weeks or so. That little flu bug has really had fun. Now that the sun has decided to shine again maybe folks will begin to feel better, we hope. The Carlos Murdocks are home again. They spent several days in Salt Lake where Carlos received medical treatments. He is feeling much better and thinks he is going to be improving right along. They visited at the homes of Heed in Salt their sons Lal.e, Joe at Prove, and Dr. Dale in Pleasant Grove whil? enroute. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Jensen and daughter, Jena, spent Saturday and Sunday in Ephraim. Mr. and Mrs. Jensen were there al tending a Southern Association Teacher Utah meeting at Sno-- Collega. They enjoyed a visit with Mr. Jen-son- 's brothers, Arlis, an English instructor at Cedar High School, and Hal who is a Business instructor at Snow College. "The Tower Drum Song" was presented by the college for the enjoyment of the teach ers in attendance. On Saturday evening all of the Jensons met for a family dinner at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Evart Jenson. The Carl Jensens also visited Roxane's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Mortensen of Ephraim. Mrs. Nell Cartwright spent a week away from Smith's Meat Locker due to illness. She is back on the job and feeling better now. Mr. Joe Willden spent Tuesday at the Valley View Hospital in Cedar City for medi cal observation. Bill and Janice Fails and son Scott were Bsaver visitors at the home last week-en- d of Janice's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garold Vickers. Bill was here to attend National Guard. Guests of Mrs. Helena over the past week-en- d were Ambrose and Bartha Dal-to- n and son Paul of Mesa, Arizona. They accompanied Vilda Since a number of folks have made favorable comments on the articles on Old Beaver I decided to run a few more. Along with all the work of getting a new settlement going in hostile country I found the Pioneers did have some fun too. In the fall after the cellars and granaries were filled they had a holiday that young and old looked forward to. It was known as the "wood dance." The matter of getting fuel for the church, the widows and the old in the community was considered one of the jolliest times of the year. Young and old participated in this activity. Every man and boy was called into service to get horses and wagons ready for the big haul. The day was set and everyone took to the hills. When they returned at night they found a hot supper waiting which had bean prepared by the women and girls during the day. The biggest build ing in town was used for the gala ff.fair. Long tables were set and the best food possible The hungry was prepared. haulers, scrubbed and attired in their best forgot their weariness as they exchanged jovial remarks and boasted of experiences during the day. A dance always followed the supper and light feet kept ' e perfect rythm to the dance orchestras. . No one stayed home unless there was sickness in the family. Mothers, fathers and the After children were there. supper the floor was cleared and mothers began to bed their broods down on benches coats and and seats with shawls for coverings. ' Then the fun began with a "Doce Do", called by a man with a voice loud enough to be heard above the din of music, shuffling feet and an occasional crying child or baby. Of course there were other dances during the year and since entertainment was rare everyone took advantage of those they had and everyone turned out.. People were very close snd shared their food, their fun, their joys and their sorrows. They were very much like a large family in many rsspects and were dependent upon one another. Even in my fay I remember "Wood Dai.'ees" and other com munity ,upi.ers. I can still remember the tantilizing smells of good food. Things were done in huge quantities and I'll r.ever forget the big copper wash boilers filled with arrrnatic smell'ng coffee and old fashioned cabbage salad literally floating in whipped cream and pies and pies! Many times I have slept thru the dance on a bench along and daughter. What their with the . ther kids . Dr. and Mrs. Allen Farnsworth fun that was" Allen is 'a son of th? And old folks, too. Ah, but dentists say that sweets are bad for teeth, and don't some nutritionists call them empty calories? Is there room for candy and sweets among the four food groups on which good nutrition is based? Or must we embrace a dietary austerity that turns its back on sweets completely. The advice about the four food groups does not exclude it emphasizes the other foods necessity for fulfilling dietary necessities first, and then allows for additions in the form of fats, sweets and other foods, up to a total food intake that does not cause undue gains in weight. Excess Not Sensible Eating candy and other sweets In excess, and neglecting the basic essential foods, doesn't make sense. Filling up with sweets just before a meal isn't smart, either. But I see no necessity for ories, when they contain nuts, fruits, peanut butter, cream, milk solids, butter, chocolate, cocoa cr enriched flour. Sugar, for example, is useful as a source of quick energy, and even though it does not supply vitamins and minerals, this absence is not important if the basic foods are included in the over-al- l diet plan in adequate quantities. Dentists' Objections Dentists' objections to sticky sweets which cling to the teeth are valid, since these favor dental decay. The remedy for this is brushing the teeth or at least thoroughly rinsing the mouth as soon as possible after eating. Eating should be an agreeable experience, not a dreaded chore. A good diet does not have to lack attractiveness; if it does, it will probably not be tolerated for long. be- and eliminating all ing a kill-josweets, if they are used correctly to finish a meal in which essential nutrients have been supplied, for an occasional snack, or to grace a festive occasion. Indeed, candy and other sweets may not be entirely empty cal y Sweets Add Interest At the risk of going out on dietetic limb, if there is such a a thing, I am being so bold as to say that reasonable and moderate use of sweets to add interest to a nutritionally sound diet, plus careful mouth hygiene, is not only permissable, but desirable.
