Show iiiiiflU SEATED COMPARISON COTNTX DENIAL SURVEY OF Can You Top This? ? ? 1963 RESULTS Recent reports from the Dixie National Forest in southern Utah describe a quaking aspen measuring nine feet 10 inches around the trunk, at a point four feet above the grousd level. No question about this size ths rough baled, well initialed Forest monarch has been declared grand champion of the Unit,d Stales for its species by the American Forestry Association. Listed in the Association's Social Register of Bg Trees, the monster challenges all comers, and at the moment is not quaking in the least. The new champion stands 12 road miles southeast of Cedar City, and was discovered "accidentally on purpose," about one year ago, James D. Curtis, silviculturist with the Experimest Station in Boise requested that personel on the Dixie National Forest an aspen he had discovered there in 1947. Curtis said the tree had reigned supreme in the Register since that time, and had now been challenged by a contestant from Caries Per Student Averajse 14 DISTRICT SCHOOL L3 -- 4.1 L2 LI 10 v ; I 1 H f:i t 4 v- J - 14 n u In -- i 1 I i t) Tl UH ' 1 I ' ' 4 t H SiH n r-- t T3 TJ-S- Wisconsin. McCulley, , Beaver County Public Health Nurse, shows that they average about 50 fewer cavities xhan students in the Beaver schools. The toothpaste company is not likely to send representatives to Beaver County to sign up prospective TV commercial actors, though, because Utah State Board of Health water tests show that the Milford area water, obtained from underground wells, contains almost the exact amount of sodium fluoride that is recommended to be added to water by the American Medical Association, the American Dental Association and the Public Health Service. The graph of the tabulated dental survey, taken in February, shows that by comparative grades Milford's students will make 50 fewer trips to the dentist, than the Beaver kids. Results of an experiment which added sodium fluoride to the water in Grand Rapids, on an experimental Mich., basis for seven years indicate almost identical results as are shown in the comparative survey between Milford and Beaver. Grand Rapids' school chilreducdren had almost a 40 tion in dental caries after the addition of sodium fluoride. Maybe Beaver should fluoridate their culinary water, at present obtained from springs in the nearby mountains. non-fluori- S r- -l S Tl T) TJ 1 rtr- - Krl r-- 1 flJfH 4H S Mrs. Vona Cox returned recently from a anonths visit in XI 5 Nevada and Arizona. BLUING YOU A Ore Samples to: round of the KO POLIO campaign in Utah showed that 80.2 percent of the state's population received the Sabin oral vaccine, thereby taking the first big step towards wiping polio out for good. Dr. Alan P. Macfarland, state poljo chairman, said: "This has been the greatest mass participation program to my memory in Utah. Everyone was enthused and the widespread interest was proved by the turnout. We are now just two months and two sugar cubes per individual away from complete elimination of polio. The pharma. cists, public health officials, nurses, Doctors and all the other groups that have done so much, can enjoy a good feeling of accomplishment by what has been done. We are sure there will be even more enthusiasm for the last two rounds of the program. tabulations show Official some 775,000 individuals, ranging from six weeks to ninety plus, have now had the Sabin oral vaccine in Utah. More than 50 of the state's population had received the Salk vaccine prior to thjs program. "This gives Utah just about the best record in America for polio immunization," according to Dr. Carlyle Thompson, director of Public Health for Utah. The second round of the KO POLIO program is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21 and the third and last round will be held on May 18 and 19. The vaccine will be given at the same locations and at the same times as in the first round in most cases. The 80.2 percent immunization is based on a state population figure of 967,000 which many experts think is too high. On a basis of 950,000, the percentage of people immunized in the Sabin oral vaccine KO POLIO program would be 81.5 percent. CRISMON & NICHOLS ASSAYERS and CHEMISTS 229 South West, Temple P. O.
