Susan Gillins and Penny Patterson motored to Ely Nev. to enjoy the horse races. Mrs. Gillins and the two girls will be guests of her daughter and husband Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hayward. Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Conner and three children of Roswell, N. M. enjoyed a weekend with Mr. and Mrs. James Eyre. Mr Conner and Mr. Eyre were buddies during the last war Harold Baker was recently released from the Milford Hospital after suffering a round with sciatic rheumatism. Mr. and Mrs. James Dove of Tungsten, Nev. departed Tuesday after spending several days with Mrs. Dove's daughter and family Mr. and Mrs. Neil Davis. They also visited relatives in Beaver. Many Minersville residents enjoyed the races at Fillmore including Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Gillins, Mr. and Mrs. Karen er . d Carter , Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Marshall, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Eyre, and Mrs. Alton Marshall, Heber Gillins, Golden Marshall, Gus Lambson, Vance Marshall, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carter, and Many others. Mr. and Mrs. Deimer Gray returned during the week after spending several days vacation-iPioche, as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bob V mmond. The Special Awards winners of the Mi.iersville MIA spon sored a talent show Monday 1 night with approximately persons on the program. Miss Ann Williams, daughter of Mrs Margaret Williams, who is va cationing here from California Mvers. son of Mr. and Mrs. Os wald Myers. Miss Williams excelled in her baton twirling performance, and Mr. Myers captivated his audience 'with his vocal rendition of The Wayward Wind." An outdoor party at Cherry Creek was given Monday eve ning in honor of Mr. and Mrs Howard Marshall, who were celebrating their eighth wed ding anniversary. Those pres ent were Mr. and Mrs. Doug Blackburn, Mr. and Mrs. Daisel Davis, and Mr. and Mrs. Newell Mr. n Carter. Mrs. Margaret Dalton was hostess at a party given in honor of her niece, Miss Ann Williams, Wednesday evening. She was assisted by her daugh ter, Miss Leah Ruth Dalton and nieces Joan and Jean Eyre Many friends enjoyed the eve ning's entertainment and ref reshments, and brought lovely gifts showing their esteem for Miss Williams, who will leave soon to reenter school In Cali fornia. Gets 'U' Honor- sDavid Keith Miller, Beaver, was accorded two of the high est honors received by grad uating students summer quar tcr at the University of Utah. Mr. Miller was selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, scholastic honor societies on the campus Members of Phi Kappa Phi were chosen from the top 0 per cent of the graduating class. The statewide pheasant hunt for male birds only, and the hunts for quail, Hungarian partridge, and chukar partridge which are each limited to several counties, all open at 8 a. m. November 10. The first chukar hunt in the history of the state was set for seven counties. They are Drag-getUinta, Duchesne, Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan. A proclamation will soon be published and available to the public showing all rules and regulations governing the four seasons. y 17-1- A recap of Utah's fish and Farmers to Vote On A S C Committeemen Ballots have been mailed to all Beaver County farmers, list ing nominees to the county con vention of the A S C, according to Keith Barton, Soil Conserva tion office manager. Additional nominees will be received at the homes of the four district chairmen, Russel Mayer, John Williams, Doyle Twitchell and John Anderson, Mr. Barton said, if petitions bear signatures of 10 residents of the conservation district. Five are to be elected in each community. Ballots must be mailed or received at the A S C office in Beaver not later than Midnight, Sept. 10, and tabulations will be completed by Sept. 13. Nominees are: East Beaver district. Manderfield, North Creek, and East of Highway 91 in Beaver Garth Baldwin, Ray Bradshaw. Rob ert Christensen, Dell J. Evans, Fred B. Harris, Fred J. Morgan, Evan Patterson, Clarence Rollins, Bert Smith, Kay Williams and Waldo Yard Mrs. Ann Eliza Gunn Joseph, mother of eight children celebrated her 90th birthday Sunday at her home in Beaver. Mrs. Joseph lives in her own home and enjoys fairly good health. She was born in Paragonah, Iron County, Aug. 26, 1866 (in the old fort which was built for protection from the Indians. She was a daughter of Thomas Gunn She enand Ann Houghton. and expedured the hardships riences of early pioneer life. The family moved to Adams-villBeaver County, when she was a small child.She received her education in Adamsville where she later taught school two years. On May 15, 1889, she married John Thomas Gunn in the Manti To them were born Temple. eight children. She also reared twin sons, John F. and Will, who were her husband's children by a previous marriage. She has always been a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-daSaints, having taught in auxiliary organizations. She also served as clerk of the Adamsville Ward and acted as first counselor in the Relief Society there for six years. In 1914, the family moved to Beaver where she continued in Church activity. She was theology class leader in the East Ward for several years and also a visiting teacher. She served as first counselor in the Beaver Stake Relief Society for ten years. Three of her sons filled missions for the Church. She was also an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and held many offices in the Nancy K. Camp. Her son, Thomas, is now on the teaching staff of the University of Minnesota. Since 1939 she has been a widow and lived alone, doing her own work and enjoying her home and family. Her living children are Arthur L., Parowan; Elizebeth Stewart, Milford; John F. Salt Lake City; Thomas, Associate dean of the School of Mines, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn; Mrs Retta Parkinson, Ernest and Walter S., Beaver. Acreage reserve payments on wheat will amount to 60 of the support price on wheat or $1.90 per bushel in Beaver County. The conservation reserve program has also been announced and any farmers who wish to sign up on this program for 1956 should do so on or before Oct 15. Senate, Tuesday defined Utah's agricultural and livestock situation to Adlai E. Stevenson and Estes Kefauver at a "grass roots" conference in the Pacific Northwest. The Utahn was there by special invitation to the presidential nominee who expressed an interest in the sound views and recommendations given him. Mr. Hopkins has long been recognized as one of the best informed Westerners in the agricultural and livestock industries, as well as one of its most able legislative exponents. g He is a rancher and livestock man, and during his service in the Utah Senate for the last 20 years he has guided every piece of agricultural legislation through that body.
