A conversational group is planned to take in several people who just like to relax and talk readily. A musical group may be placed around the piano or radio to make these activities pleasing. Comfortable chairs or sofas within easy reach of the bookshelves give the room a reading group. A desk with bookshelves and good lighting will give you a writing group. Groups such as this are logical and useful arrangements, and thus contribute to the utility and comfort of a home. Unity of texture, scale and color are essential within the groups but should vary between different groups to afford variety. This does not mean that you do not have high and low pieces within the group, but they should look pleasing together. Give Rooms Some Center of Interest When you enter a room, your eye should be drawn to a grouping, which is particularly lovely, or a distinctive piece of furniture or fireplace or a collection. There may be a center of interest which is of secondary importance, too. In some cases this is essential, for example, if you have a picture window. This is spectacular during day'.'me, but not as important during '.he evening. If you have an Interesting fireplace, however, this takes care of the interest. A center of interest will have to be designated In the living room, or planned specifically. In the den. library or dining room, they will come naturally because the function of the room determines them to a large extent. Pianos frequently determine much of the interest in a large living room. The upright types are placed against the wall, but a grand piano s frequently angled.
