ABLE CHURCH LEADER CALLED The death of President TIeher J. Grant at the ripe age of 88, and after nearly 27 years as president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Saints, brings various reactions, even among the nearly one million members of the church. Certainly President .Grant has been an able leader, and has done much to establish amicable relations between the Church and the leading figures in industry, finance, transportation, etc. ; and during his incumbency in the office much of the prejudice and persecution formerly endured by the Church has been abated. lie has been a positive and forceful leader, and has commanded the respect and the obedience of members to a very great extent, lie has been a strong defender of the Word of Wisdom, and practiced what he preached. On the other hand, it must be admitted that 88 years is a very generous age, and Dame Nature is inexorable in her decrees and demands. No man can be as capable at 88 as at 48, 58, or even 68. Perhaps the work of the Church, therefore, may go forward with excellerated momentum under the guidance of a younger man and the enthusiasm of an new leader. President Grant has had an active and eventful life, and goes to a well earned rest. Under the precedent established for the succession to presidency in the L D S Church, the mantle now falls on Elder George Albert Smith, President of the Cauncil of Twelve, who is himself 75 years of age. So long as he occupies the position of President, he will no doubt have the loyal support of all members. There are many times and circumstances in life when "Our strength is, to sit still." If the Germans do not yet understand it. Allied unity and firmness should be such as to make it clear and keep it clear. For a while it began to look as if in defeat the Germans had partially accomplished their desire to separate Russia and Britain and America. The fact that there were two surrenders, that the Germans kept fighting for an extra day on the Eastern front and that Britain and .America Celebrated a day ahead, gave the appearance of more division than exists. It should be emphasized that the terms were almost identical, that the surrender was made not only "unconditionally" but "simultaneously"; and all four Allies were represented at both signings. News of the two one for each high command would have been announced simultaneously in Moscow, London and Washington had not an Associated Press correspondent broken secrecy regulations. For years, hunters have shot the coot or mudhen and then tossed the waterfowl away in disgust, despite opinions of experts that the "mudhen" was as edible as any other duck. At a recent meeting of "Ducks Unlimited," according to information received by the State Fish and Game department, the sportsmen voted to change the common name of "mudhen" to "whitebill," and as such the coot Is expected to Join the other waterfowl on the average bill of fare. Investigation has shown the "mudhen" or "whitebill" does not eat fish and mud as commonly suspected, but that its diet is as clean as any duck's.
