UTAH GREETINGS MAY be with you, I A am. Junristmas Merry peace-lovin- homes, including thousands in our own state, are suffering the tortures of anxiety and uncertainty at this festive season, when the hearts of men and women should be turned to better things. And when the costs are interpreted into vacant chairs in family circles e handiat home and into caps for others, stark tragedy and mourning will stalk our land. Christmas is intended to commemorate the birth of Christ, the foremost advocate of peace on earth and good will to all men. Who is reputed to have over 700 million followers among the higher civilized, nations of the world, and who have had nearly 2,000 years to absorb the import of the message He gave. And yet on this blessed Christmas we find most of them locked in a life and death struggle the most trrible the world has ever experienced, so far as history reveals. Is it not apparent that there is something radically wrong with our much boasted and publicized pattern of Christianity? Is there anyone so obtuse as to believe that real followers of the lowly Nazer ine could be guilty of precipitating such a diabolical conflict But, on the other hhad, how many of us go back to first principles and try to fathom the real causes for war, which often cloaked by religion, but actuated by greed for wealth and power, lay the founda tions for world unrest and unhap- piness which ultimately lead to war with all its calamities? If people would only come to realize that "The earth is the Lord's" and that we are merely temporary tenants; that "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise, the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon." But No. Mammon is still the idol and king of this earth, and God and Christ, despite all the Christian professions, are only poor seconds in the race for popularity. Actions speak lowder than words, witness, Jesus said: "And why call me Lord, Lord, and do not the things that I say?" If all the professors of Christianity were "doing" the things Christ taught, wars would, be an impossibility, But no! Men are ambitious for wealth and power, and they spend their time and energies evolving means of satisfying their abnor mal cravings. They become callous of the rights and needs of other human beings. They are no long' er content with a reasonable share of the fruits of the earth, they hoard and manipulate and scheme to deprive others of their rightful Inheritepce, in order that they may live in a super abundance and exert control over the lives and fortunes of countless numbers of their, fellow beings. Then some of those suffering these injustices revolt and take the only course that appears to be open to them they resort to violence to recap ture that which was taken from them by subtility and and sharp trade practices. And then we have crime waves, revolution or world wars! So long as certain nations insist upon playing power politics and controlling and exploiting hun dreds of millions of unfortunate peoples, there will be ever recur ring world conflicts, increasing In savagery and violence until the civilization of this epoch of- time will again be obliterated, Just as It probably has been in prehistoric times of the fathomless past. What is happening In Greece to day Is an example of what the world may expect from our costly and momentous struggle to free the world from dictatorships and oppression. Little can be accomplished until God can be made to replace Mammon In the human breasts. i t TO EVERYBODY; - our friends, and with oH of us... in our souls and upon our hearths. During this sacred season, mellowed by the thought of those who cannot be with us, we have abundant reason for gratitude. We have come a long way since the dark Christmas of 1941. The Star in the East shines brighter now. That this may, indeed, be a Merry Christmas for you and yours is our ardent wish. RED & WHITE STORE W. C.
