The present management has now been with thd paper one year and approximately three months. Considering the war and the condition of small business generally, we are still satisfied with our venture and any kind of new business is nothing less than a venture in times like these. On the whole, the people of Beaver have been cooperative and interested in having a live newspaper to represent them, and have expressed many words of commendation for our efforts thus far. If any expected perfection, they have naturally been disappointed. But at least they cannot accuse us of being indolent or indifferent. We have worked earnestly to build the paper up mechanically, morally and entertainingly. How far we have succeeded, we leave our readers to judge. And now we face a new volume and a New Year with renewed determination to keep your local newspaper fully abreast of the times and of other local conditions in Beaver City and County. And we1 feel sure that you, our readers and the business men will continue to do your part. Thank you. Christians awake, salute the happy morn Whereon the Savior of the world was born. John Byrom. BEAVER TO BE ON THE MAIN LINE That was most heartening news that was brought back last week from Santa Monica, California, by Air Committeeman Dcrn Osborne, that Beaver City Airport project is in second position in respect to the improvement and completion of its Airport, Price, Utah, being the only city placed ahead of Beaver. With a coast-wid- e organization behind the undertaking, and the local port geared to an extensive airway transportation system, the project can be considered safe and due for early completion, provided local people do their part. Postwar Aviation is destined to play a tremendously important part in the commerce and transportation of the future in this country, and Beaver City will make no mistake in arranging to "have her dish the right side up" when the war ends. We have a live and public-spirite- d Committee behind the undertaking, and we may look for early and consistent developments in this connection. Considerable work has already been clone on the runways, and a comparitively small amount of additional surfacing and the construction of one culvert will place the landing field in usable condition, and this work has already been placed in charge of Mayor H. 'D. Thompson and will be pushed as fast as weather conditons will permit. It won't be long after the war ends before you can take a plane at the Beaver Airport within two miles of town and fly to any part of the civilized world. And we arc promised that the fares will be remarkably reasonable in comparison with other means of transportation, especially when the element of time is taken into consideration. effective. Morever, each of these men has accurately judged the steps that need to be taken, and each has made strenuous eflorts to have them followed. But the plain fact confronts the Nation that the leadership of these men is no longer being accepted. Farmers and workers are both vehemently attacking the controls placed on them; Congress is in apparent revolt at even retaining the controls now in effect, much less strengthening them as they need to be strengthened. The people as a whole seem oblivious of the true proportions or the consequences of the inflationary threat hanging over them. The fight "against inflation has become snarled in partisan workpolitics, economic emotions, a row between farmers and and wholesale ers, public ignorance. Something must be done immediately to lift it above this morass and place it on the same plane as the military conduct of the war and the production front of the war. The fight against inflation belongs on such a plane. Nothing can be more damagthings ing to the home front than the ravages of inflation ; few inflated can be more threatening'to future peace prospects than American economy that must be protected with isolating tariffs. Americans would not stand for any fight between the conservative and the liberals that limited or impeded the production of war materials. Projection of a dispute between the Democrats and the Republicans into conduct of the Army and Navy would be unthinkable. Yet, just such fights and disputes now impede the inflation war front. While Washington may not presently abound in supermen, correct answers to the inflation problem can be found all the way from Lafayette Square to Capitol Street. The answer cannot be given in a word. The fight against inflation has at least seven main departments, each of which must be carefully integrated in the whole. These are : 1. A firm frozen, or ceiling, price on all essential goods, especially foods. 2. Rationing of short items. 3. Effective wage controls. 4. Subsidies to (a) adjust inequities as between fixed wages and certain unquestionably essential foods, and to (h) foster production of foods needed to combat famine. 5. A tax program that will realistically draw off surplus purchasing power. The $10,500,000,(X)0 goal set by the Administration seems to be a minimum required for this purpose. continuous, hard driving savings campaign, of which Bond drives are a good working example. War the 7. Intelligent understanding on the part of a clear majority of the people of both the consequences of inflation and these steps required to avert those consequences. This last, of course, is presently what is so vividly lacking. For if the people knew of their opportunity to lay foundations e for international economic peace by sacrificing to d combat inflation today, America would have support for the control measures. In this department lies the greatest failure of the present leaders in the fight against inflation. It is now plainly the President's task to find the means for enlisting public confidence behind a real fight against inflation. "Very few pieces of valuable residence or farm property is found in this li.st and practically no business houses." Note that 1932 and 1933 established all time highs for number of people delinquent in the payment of their taxes, and that for several years the delinquent lists have been steadily shrinking until this year, when there is an all time low. Beaver County is in line with the rest of the state, with the smallest list in many years, shown in our last issue. Small tax' lists show a prosperous condition of the people, large delinquent tax lists are a mute evidence of hard times. Those persons, who for minor irritations are ready to throw away all the gains of recent years and return to thirty-twor thirty-thre- e levels, would do well to "look before thev leap." If additional evidence is needed to prove economic trends, you might consider the words of Pres. J, Reuben Clark during the October last general conference when he stated that 1941 broke all previous records of the LDS church fo the payment of tithing; but that in 1942 this record was bettered by 50 per o j IN THE FUTURE 1HE POCKETBOO "The Delinquent Tax list for Iron County, w hich is published in this issue of the Times, is the smallest since 1929, or as long as the present editor has been with the paper in any capacity, and is a tremendous drop from the depression years of the early "Thirties". "The big delinquent tax lists commenced with the Bank crash in 1931 and reached their peak in 1932 and 1933, when the Railroad, Telephone, Power Company and a few other utilities paid around 65 percent of the taxes paid in Iron county. From then to 1937 the improvement was gradual but slow, with the biggest increase in taxes paid coming since then.
