Show NOVEMBER 10, 1038 THE BEAVER PRESS, THURSDAY, FARM NEWS NOTES "Beet looses In storage piles have always caused a serious drain on the sugar beet Industry" a recent bulletin of the Idaho college of agricultural explains in summarizing results of experiments conducted by the bureau of plant Industry on the effect of fertilizers on sugar beets. To test the keeping quality of unfertilized beets and those receiving an application of superphosphate, samples of beets In openmeshed bags were placed In factory storage piles. Decay looses in the pbos phorus starved beets were these to five times as serious as those in the fertilized beets. Increases in yield were about what was expected from addition of phosphates, but the improved keeping quality is an additional reason for applying superphosphate, the bulletin explains. rates paid to farm workers during the third quarter of Wage have declined in contrast to the usual increase in the period, the bureau of agricultural economics reports. On October 1 rates average 118 per cent of wages but two points lowes than on July 1 and eight points lower than October 1, 1937. Practically all drops In wage rates occured in monthly rates. Little change was reported for day rates. 1 9 L 8 pre-w- ar .. Modification of "fair and reasonable" wage rates for beet harvesting In Utah was announced recently by the Utah Agricultural Conservation committee, allowing for the farmer to reduce the rate of payment for topping and loading by 25 per cent where he does his own loading. Based on the "fair and reasonable" rate scale announced September 19, the harvesting rate per eon on yields of eight tons or less per acre would be reduced from 11.12 to 8 4c, a deduction of 28c. Where the acre yield Is 18 or more tons, the rate would be reduced from 90 cents per ton to 67 cents, a reduction of 22 cents for loading. Other rates, varying according to acre yields, are reduced Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Nield and daughter Berneice returned home after spending two weeks with Mr. and Mrs. William Blackner. On Our Way REMEMBER? Kisslmmee Florida - Here is the best Florida story we have heard yet. It happened at New Smyraha on the east coast. There were lots of squirrels around the camp and the Campers made pets o( them. They would climb up on their shoulders and eat out of their hands. A dish with water for them was put out on a post in the yard and one cold morning a squirrel came for a drink but the water was frozen over. After lapping the Ice with his tongue for a minute he got in the dish and sat on the ice unti he had mel ted a little pool, and then ,he drank from the pool, "Believe It or Not".
