Sweet who was a special sales agent for the Standard Oil company at Cedar City, had gone with his wife to the coast on a two week vacation. Their marriage had not been announced at Cedar City, but. according to Leroy B. Luken, adjutant of the American Legion post at Milford, he was married last January to Winifred Cruickshank of Montpelier, Ida. Miss Cruickshank had been a school teacher at Minersville. The young couple went in swimming at the San Diego resort and had waded quite a distance away from the short. Suddenly onlookers saw that they were in trouble. Their actions,- to the coast guard, Walter Deal, meant only one thing that they were drowning. Swimming out to the couple, the guard saw that Mrs. Sweet had her arms around Sweet's neck with a death grip. He was doing his utmost to hold his wife up, both having been caught by a riptide. Struggling in the water, it seemed that both would be lost. The life guard succeeded in breaking the strangle hold Mrs. Sweet had on her husband and swam with her to shore where she was revived. In the meantime Willis Buck Jumped Into the water and swam to Sweet. Fighting the fast tide every inch of the way, he finally dragged Sweet to shore, but when he was pulled on the beach life was found to be extinct. Mrs. Sweet, on learning the fate of her husband, became hysterical. Sweet had been in Utah for four years and moved to Cedar City four months ago. He resided at Milford for some time, where he was active In legion affairs. He resigned as commander of the post when he took over his position at Cedar City. His mother lives in New Haven, Conn. During the World war he served In the navy. Later The above Associated Press report of the drowning of Clarence D. Sweet, who lost his life in the surf at San Diego, California, were misleading so far as his wife was concerned. The various papers of the cost cities stated that he was swimming with his wife, when the riptide caught them. This was entirely wrong, his wife was in Montpelier, Idaho at the time living with her parents. Yesterday, F. L. Cruickshank, and the wife of Mr. Sweet, arrived in Cedar City, having gone there to make arrangements for the shipment of tha body from San Diego to New Haven, - Conn.. o BETTY COMPSON COMES BACK .
