A tragedy which is unparallelled in the history of our city, occured lust Monday night in the Beaver canyon, just above Baker crossing. The victim was Stanley Hodges, the fourteen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hodges, of this city. Mr. Hodges and his boy were hauling poles, and through some mishap were belated In coming 'down the canyon. The night was stormy and unusually dark, and the road, under such conditions, was at some points almost impassable. Just above the month of Baker canyon part of the road has been rebuilt, and in the darkness the team took the old road, which run? along the river bank and is badly washed out. The bank is steep and high, and the soft soil gave way under the weight of the wagon. Without a second's warning the load overturned and plunged into the dark water, bearing with it both Mr. Hodges and the boy. Mr. Hodges managed to extricate himself from under the load but the boy was tlghtlyt pinned under the wagon and under the water. Working desperately, in total darkness and with the rain pouring down In torrents, the father, almost insane with fear for his son, fought as only a father could have fought, for his boy's life. For over two hours, he exerted every energy, every muscle, in a hopeless struggle to free the prisoner. Then kind death came kind to the suffering lad.
