Show Software conference returns to Salt Palace by Gary Boyle Hilltop Times staff More than 3,000 software professionals from academia, private industry, contractors and government agencies are expected to exchange ideas, concepts and share information during the 13th annual Software Technology Conference. The conference will be held April y 4 at the Salt Palace Convention CenS. West Temple, in Salt Lake City. 100 ter. It is the largest conference of its kind in the Department of Defense. A myriad of participants and presentations will address this year's theme "2001 29-Ma- Software Odyssey: Controlling Cost, Schedule and Quality." Events are geared toward beginner, inttTmediate and advanced levels of technical expertise. Deputy undersecretary of Defense Dr. Delores Etter and Adobe tor of Government Systems Woody Hume will be the conference's opening speakers on April 30 at 1:30 p.m. in the convention center ballroom. A highlight of the conference will take place May 1 at 8 a.m., during the Systems direc- co-spo- n- r - - sot's panel discussion moderated by Chief Technology Officer for the Defense Information System Agency and Chief Eng- ineering Executive for Information Processing w ithin the Joint Interoperability and Engineering Organization Dawn C. Meyerriecks. The panel will include DISA Director Lt Gen, Harry D. Raduege Jr., Director of Information Sys- tems for Command, Control, Communications, and Computers Army Lt Gen. Peter M. Cuviello, Vice Commander, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Rear Adm. Kenneth D. Slaght, and Deputy Secretary, Science, Technology, and Engineering Dr. Donald C. Daniel, USAF. A speaker of unique interest will be educator and creator of "The Theory Of Constraints" Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt who will discuss his theory May 3, at 8 a.m. in the convention center ballroom. The DoD's Common Access Card will be one of the topics focused on May 1, starting at 1 p.m. The technologically advanced smart card was first issued in October 2000 and will be the standard identification for 4 million uniformed service personnel, selected reserve, DoD civilian employees and eligible con- tractor personnel. Along with providing the same benefits as the current identification card, the new smart card will be the principal card to gain access to DoD buildings, controlled spaces, and to gain access to the department's computer networks and systems. The General Services Administration will partner with the STC to discuss how Section 508 will impact organizations both Monday and Tuesday. A portion of the Rehabilitation Act, Section 508 requires access for disabled persons to the federal government's electronic information technology. A tutorial and panel discussion will aid and educate participants on the new standards and address issues such as webmaster training, procurement guidelines, legal and budgetary implications, team building and strategic planning. Air Force Maj. Gen. John L Barry, director of strategic planning, deputy chief of staff for plans and programs will be the closing speaker of the conference on May 3, at 4:30 p.m. at the convention center ballroom. Festive events include a dinner cruise on the great Salt Lake May 3, at 6:15 p.m. of an early Beaand a rousing tles concert with "1964...
