Livestock Forage Two thousand cattle and over 17,000 sheep graze on the fed eral land in this unit during some period each year. Because of the elevations, topography, and forage, deer use at least some part of the unit during all seasons of the year; however, winter is the critical time. The main problem for deer is the maintenance of adequate winter forage. In the Gordon Creek, area, browse is not adequarei and about 10 of the deer herd is lost thnough nutritional deficiencies each year. About 50 of the critical deer winter range is on public land in the Gordon Creek area. It is esTimated that 1,300 hunter days use is made on the public land in this un.it annually for deer hunting. Game animals that may be found in varying numbers on the unit are: moose, elk. deer, bear, lion and rabbit. Fish wat erfowl, and upland game are also found in the urn? but are mostly found on private land; however, some of the major and strutting ares are on public landln the Park. Chukars are also found on pub lic land on Pornhyry Bench and other areas. There is also a e host of animals and: birds to be found. Where conflicts occur, whih Woodland foresil products are available on the unit, low quan tity, quality and inaccessibility would make any logging op eration marginal. The only cur Though rent demand for forest products ha? been for firewood, Christmas trees, and fence posts. Is there likely to be a future demand for foorest products from this area? Most of the runoff drains into the Price River, Price Rive is a major sediment and pollutant contributor to the Green River. Much of the wa'er quality problem of the Price River originates within this unit. The erosion problems can generally be attributed to: (1) Continuous overgrazing; (2) highly erodible soils, and (3) steep topography.
