WILDMON THE DARK PERIODS OF LIFE I once read of a little girl's experience in riding a train through tunnels. The first time she was on a train which passed through a tunnel she scooted over real close to her mother and! held on for dear life. However, after a few experiences the little girl was much more relaxed while passing through the tunnels. Eventually, after just leaving a tunnel, the little girl turned to her mother and remarked: "Mather, I like tun- nels." Rather sjfeunned, It God is much like a majority of the people responsible for the production of a movie. They he mother asked why she liked tunnels. The small child replied: "Because tunnels have light at botli ends." There are many tunnels we must pass through in life tunnels of deep hurt, disappoint-menlIn the sorrow, grief. midst of life's tunnels, when it is the blackest, there are some ithings about God which we need to remember. One thing we need to remember is that God is with us, working for us, even when we aren'lt aware of His presence. God doesn't hiang out a sign which says: "The Almighty is at work here." God goes about His business of healing the hurt in our lives, and He does it unseen, unheard, and unnoticed. t, work behind the scenes, putting the pieces together so that the movie will have some meaning to it. Often the presence of God is more of a conviction than it is a feeling. His presence, you see, isn't dependent upon our feelings. Sometimes the hurt is so great in the darkness of the tunnel we are not aware of But tunnels God's presence. have light at both ends. Keep traveling. Don't stop. Another thing about God we need to remember when in a tunnel is this: Even when wo fail ito ask for His help, God continues to help. Sometimes the hurt in life is so deep that we cannot utter prayers as we normally would. Perhaps we even fail to think of God. Does a parent always wait to be asked by his child before he begins to help? Of course not. Neither does God wait. If we have given our life to God, and have tried our best to be true and faithful to Him, it isn't His nalhire to run out e tern on us simply because porarilv forget to ask for Hi" help. Although there is a wailing period for which no benefits can be paid, the disabled should file a claim early. Mr Donaldson said that in many cases all work on the claim can be accomplished before the end of the waiting period and a check can be received for the first month payment is possible. If the disabled person is unable to call ait the office in person, his claim can usually be handled by telepnohe, or a relative can help by visiting the nearest social security rep resentative. The manager pointed out that some people wait several years afer the beginning of a serious illness or accident to contact the social security office. Because social security benefits can be paid retroactively for only 12 months, these people lose hundreds of dollars. Donaldson stressed thalt accurate information about the disaWity program can be obtained from a social security representative. Because of frequent changes in the laws, information provid ed by well meaning friends may prove to be incorrect and cause delay or loss of payment. It is noted, however, that in approximately 50 of the cases reviewed the client was eligible for most of the grant he reciv ed, or was eligible for another program. Approximately 2.5 of the cases reviewed revealed' fraudulent applications. Figures for the first quarter of J972 revealed that the present inelig ibility rate for Utah has been reduced to 3.8 according to Evan E. Jones, Jr., Director of the Division of Family services. The reasons for the reduction, according to Roy Cooper, Director of Income Maintenance, are: The use of a computer to verify the information required on a public assistance application, the use of a much tighter application process, and the conscientiousness of the assist ance payment staff. part Mr Cooper says "A person applying for public assistance will receive all he is entitled to receive under the law, but he must fully qualify in accordance wfh the same law." Cooper feels that he can fur ther reduce rate by a the three-pronge- d First, ineligibility attack simplifying and clari- fying the myriad of policies and regulations covering the numerous situations for which public assistance can be granted, thus making it much easier for an eligibility worker to determine whether or not a person can qualify for the program.
