UTAH 6 THURSDAY, FEB. 7, 1963 rice Hives Water Rights Have Priority ver Sanpete County Tripartite Contract TELEPHONE RATES REDUCTION For many years, and most recently in Washington, D.C., the Sanpete County water interests have stoutly maintained that all of the water us;r. of Carbon County haw agreed by contract, to build the so.called "Gooseberry Project'' which consists of a trans-ibasidiversion of water from the Colorado River Basin to the Sevier River Basin. The Sanpepte County interests have also consistently stated that ihey were enitled to divert all of the waters ip Gooseberry Creek without regard to the prior decreed rights of the Carbon Coun ty interests. Commenting on this opinion, Mayor Chris Jouflas of Helper said this week: "To clear the air with regard to these charges Price City, Helper City, Indepen. dent Coal & Coke Co , United ... . a- u. companies of Carbon area, brought suit in August of 1962 against the United States Gov ernment Water and Sanpete Users Assn., to determine whe. ther these Carbon County interests have- agreed by contract to the Gooseberry diversion, and Whether Sanpete interests were entitkd to all cf the water of Gooseberry Creek. In May of 1&62, long tance rates on calls within the State of Utah were reduced from 5 to 15 cents depending on the distance involved. In addition, re. port charges were discontinued on uncompleted pcrson.to-rperso- n dis- calls. The discontinuance of report and the reduction in charges other calling rates last May, resulted in a substantial savings Utah telephone users, Phil Horsiey, Manager of the Price ofliieo lor Mountain States Tele- phone Company, said today. It is anticipated the recently announced ,change in rates for out.of-stat- e calls, will save the telephone usets, across the nation, $30 million annually. $V HELPER'S VOLUNTEER FIREMEN During a "breathing spell" from selling tickets to their famous Firemen's Ball, to be held this Saturday, (Feb. 9th), they posed for this " Toigo, and Assistant Chief picture. This last admission was a reversal of previous positons taken by the Sanpete group and should do much to fanally bring a halt to any attempts to divert water from the Price River watershed.. (Price Mayor William J. Welsh Jr., Commission Louis Kosec and Mayor Jouflas expressed satisfaction with the results of the law suit, particularly the ad missions of .the Sanpete legal counsel relating to the status of the cities and other primary waiter users of the system. 'Mayor Wehh, commenting on the action, said: "As a result of the admissions of the Sanpete group which removed the threat of their attempt to interfere with the water rights of the plaintiffs, the judge ruled that the suit should foe dismissed (because the? issues as pleaded by tha plaintiffs had been resolved in open' court.'' County leaders further stated that this action is once again a; vindication of the protests made by water groups of Carbon Coun ty, and completely validates the action of two congressional com mittees who did not approve the project as proposed by Sanpete. reduced accordingly and would at tie Tip Top Service Station not exceed 25 cents per minute next to the Helper city hall, put man in the hospital and in any case, Mr Horsiey said.
