Compiled by Douglas N. Thompson, the study points out that work being done "should shed considerable light on the demand for coal tar chemicals in this area," and adds that "preliminary information indicates that Utah can likely support a smokeless fuel industry." In discussing the potential demand for char, the study states that while "each year about 25,000 tons of coal are distributed to retail yards in Utah it appears that a single 500 to 100 ton per day plant would go a long ... signtd to start quiet, run quiet one-ha- Out For Safety lf stop-sig- - Chemical and Refining Company, it declares: "This Utah corporation Is still in the development stage. It is the opinion of informed observers that with adequate financial backing and proper management, this process could be developed on a commercial scale." In discussing the operations of the Records Coal Processing Cor poration, the University study declares that the company has a commercial plant at Wellington, Utah with a rated capacity of 100 tons per day, but that production of experimental consisted has runs. According to the study the plant is not in operation at the present time. "The process consists of forcing superheated steam through nut coal placed in large retorts. Each batch requires a three to three and one-ha- lf hour processing peare carried riod. The off by steam to vats for later processing in the breakdown plant. The char removed from the bottom of the retort is run through a slurry for cooling and removal of low quality char. No tars have been sold as yet.. The company anticipates that upon completion of the breakdown plant, the value of the tars can be increased by sep aration into certain constituents. Large quantities, of are claimed." In conclusion, the report discussing the work of the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Utah, says in searching for a satisfactory coking process for Utah's submarginal coking coals, the station has developed a process that appears to be able "to produce a satisfactory domestic fuel as well as a strong metallurgical coke. This process is a new combination of coal processing arts. It has been tested with Utah coal at pilot plants in Illinois and Missouri. "If this unorthodox coking process can be developed to produce commercially a high quality metallurgical coke from Utah's submar ginal coking coal, it could be of major Importance in facilitating the industrial development of the West. This Is emphasized by the fact that Utah's coking coal pro. duces a coke inferior to coke from eastern coals under traditional coking methods. Also, Utah's methods is said to he of coal that can be coked by ply extremely limited. "No definite plans have been developed for the commercial promotion of this process either for the production of coke or a domestic smokeless fuel." ed While sidewall li'rei ooiVobl 18c Far!
