Show HELPER THE JOURNAL THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1948 CENTER OF WEST S GREATEST COAL FIELD WHAT AMERICA STANDS FOR Herbert Hoover, in a talk made in the little town of West Branch, Io ., where he was born, gave one of the finest expressions ever made of what this country stands for. "America means far more than a continent bounded by two oceans," be said. "It is more than pride of military power, glory in war, or in victory. It means mora than the vast expanse of farms, of great fac tories or mines, magnificent cities, or millions of automobiles and radios. It is more even than thft traditions of the great tide westward trom which pioneered the conquest of a continent. It is more Europe Red Diamond No. 303 Case ffrr vvwu uu Kounty Kist Mo. 303 Case $3.45 Tomato case $4.90 Soup i case $2.50 TCrJITOES 12 FRANCO-AMERICA- SPAGHETTI NDATO SAUCE MILK CASE SCOWCROFT NO. 2 CANS CANS FOR 369 185 CASE N HUNTS' their Navy's status and progress. NOWTHEREFORE, as Mayor of the City of Helper. I urge all citizens of this city to give solemn and careful thought to the need of this country for a strong Navy as the nation's first line of de- 12 CANS fense. FURTHERMORE, I urge all who can to fly the National colors on Navy Day; the flying of the Navy Award which might have been won by any 'business firm in this country, and the wearing of the uniforms by all citizens who have served in the Navy. compllshment." Those who attempt to interpret the greatness of this country in purely material terms are blind to the "basic truths. Other nations pos, sess resources which are comparable to ours. We have no monopoly on intelligence, on knowledge, on energy, on the potential ability to create and build. But here, alone of the great powers of the modern world, we have maintained the right of the individual to do whatever he pleases within the framework of the law. We have said, in effect, that the man controls the state and the state does not control the man. This has been one of the greatest achivements in the whole vast sweep of recorded history. Yet we must forget that freedom must al. ways 'be guarded and defended if it is to live. Elsewhere in his address, speaking of his boyhood, Mr. Hoover said, "In those primitive days, so. cial security was had from the cellar, not from the Federal government." The most dangerous tendency of our times lies in our ever-i- n creasing dependence on government. When we buy a dubious "secur. ity" at the price of loss of personal liberty, ve are following the same old downhill path that has led to oppression and dictatorship through out the world. i The real American values are spiritual. All our other values, like all our wealth and power, stems from them alone. They have sustained us in every period of adversity, ranging from disastrous depressions to terrible wars. And those values, based as they are upon the dignity and rights of man, we can find the real meaning 0f America.
