Somewhere in the Pacific (Delayed) A. Jap soldier who carried a tiny baby, in his arms as a shield and disguised himself as a woman, failed to outwit Marines on Okinawa. The Jap was captured and the baby was saved, according to Marine Private First Class PETER P. LIAPIS, 20, son of Mr and Mrs Paul P. Liapis of Helper. Liapis, a 1943 graduate of Carbon high school in Price, is undergoing treatment at a hospital here for complications resulting from leg wounds received in an earlier campaign. "The disguised Jap tried to use the baby as a protective shield when we cornered him in a native hut the third day of the campaign," said Liapis, who went ashore with the assault forces on "I was with a patrol when we came across the hut and heard Japs talking inside. As we set up a skirmish line, a Nambu (machine gun) opened up on us from the rear, but some other outfit took care of it and no one was hit. "Then, just as we were about to cut loose on the hut, we heard a baby crying and everyone held fire. But the Japs knew we were there. Two of them made a break for it. They were killed. "We were sure there were still others inside besides the baby, so we tossed a smoke grenade at the shack to flush them out without hurt ing the kid. First a Jap woman a woman came out. She was followed by another adult, carry ing that squalling baby and wearing a scarf around her or rather his head. "We were sure it was a woman Buy Bonds For Victory: .
