Commis. sioner Bundy apparently got Ms (1, wires crosseuJ BouiBwuuie, . .1 joint committee of labor and industry devoted a great deal of time, profiton ably, in ironing out a compromise the bill respecting extension of benefits under the Workmens' Compensation and the Occupational Disease acts. They recommended a boost in minim nnmnpnsation from $16 a week to $22.50 a week. W. C. Jen and his committee sen. have approved those recommendations. They will probably be accept. ed intact this week. Other negotiations & compromises are ahead for the major controversial measures yet to be presented. Sucb as elections and voting, post war planning for employment and public construction, budgeting of the state's income (and there really is a stick. ler!); taxation (another brutal word In these days); highways, social security afafirs and that always diverting and continuing question of deers for the hunters and brouse for the sheep and cattle (or which). There seem to (be anywhere from two to 20 schools of thought on any of all of these proposals. Then you've got the liquor commission's commis. sions or failures of comission (de. pending on the point of view), the department of agriculture's desires to extend their domain to everything from the num'ber of cows to 'bulls on public land, to assumption of control over all soil conservation enterprises. And the gamut of subjects be. fore the legislature runs on to an unbelieveable number. Rep. Selvoy J. Boyer (D.Spring-ville- ) took a lot of wind out of the organized labor sails in the house early in the week's proceedings when he squelched Rep. Frank Bonacci and his effort to permit public employes and agencies to bar. gain collectively by saying "are we to lose the spoils' system and freeze every public job in Utah " The house agreed with the Democratic floor leader. No collective bargaining for the state or other public employes. A lot of other civil service proposals are quite apt to meet a similary conclusive fate. But the county fire, men did win a victory their plea for recognition was granted. Senator Mitchell Melich (RJMoab) chalked up a couple of credit marks by his successful sponsorship of the emergency measure permitting the continued employment of women in above.ground mining operations. The aggressive and articulate Republican floor leader in the house, Rep. Clifton G. M. Kerr of Tremonton, abet, ted forceful speaker W. R. White In cutting off debate that has resulted in the tabling of nine and he recommitting to committee of a like number of bills. The Senate, the smaller and thus far more deliberate .body was having difficulties in the matter of Govern, or Herbert B. Maw's recommendations for commission appointments, so far as the record shows, all is "sweet harmony". But, emphatically, the one vote margin by which presi. dent Dexter Farr won his place hasn't yet been sufficient to get he Democratic caucuses into agreement with the chief of state's suggestions. The first major blast at one of the Governor's pet reorganization schemes was exploded hy Sen.
