ALTAR SOCIETY IVIEETS TUESDAY SALT LAKE CITY Utah big game have shown a tremendous increase and there are nearly 10 times the number of hunters now as there were 15 years ago. Hunting and fishing have increased in proportion to the supply. This is revealed in a survey extended over a long period, made in deer connection .with the and elk management program adopted by the Utah Fish and Game department. Records indicated that in 1925, there were 18,500 deer in Utah's national forests. Today, the deer population exceeds 138,000. As the herds of big game increased so did the number of hunters. For example, 5.657 deer hunters were recorded in 1925. In 1941, there were 43,000 successful hunters. There are several reasons for the iucreases. The foremost Is big game management that is, controlling the number of deer or elk taken during a season and controlling the area from which they are taken. Second, about half of the does have twins, many counts showing almost as many fawn as does. Predators which kill sheep also e kill deer. With a program of predatory control, the enemies of the deer are eliminated at the same time the enemies of the sheep are killed. Control of predatory animals is probably operating to increase the deer more than the buck law. Thus it is that the deer have become their own natural enemies. By overpopulation, they have crowded ranges and have caused a shortage of winter feed in many places. By the same token, they have Invaded crops and orchards for food, causing numerous complaints from farmers throughout the state who have asked for compensation for produce loss.
