UVES In Advance i fpo The paintings assembled in the new show at Helper Community Gallery, which event went on display yesterday, were all done by Utah artists for the I't.ih WTA Statewide Art Project. Typifying as they do. the hih standards of art work set by the Federal Art Project, they represent artists who might have had to abandon art altogether were it not for government aid which helped rhein to weather the depression. Art was especially hard hit, was one of thu first to fee the depression. No one co 1,1 afford to buy art works and the majority of artists found themselves facing starvation or relief. At one time or another, American artists whose works are honored in leading galleries were the almost all desparately facing necessity of abandoning art careers to attempt earning a ljving in other kinds of work about which they know nothing. Earlier relief measuies forced American artists wno were internationally noted to accept unskilled, pick and shovel jobs. No provision was made of the artist. America was classed with China and India as a backward country without any government sponsorship of the Arts. Every other nation supported artists in some form of subsidy. Eventually, assistance was offered to artists in their own field. After several experiments, the WPA Federal Art Project was conceived. It brought much needed assistance to talented artists, permitted them to express themselves in their own way, and b: ought art to th,. people more than ever before. Nationally and in Utah, practically every distinguished artist who did ' not hold a teaching position, found himself on the Federal Art Project, the WPA roll reads like a Who's Who of American Art. It lists prize winners in national and international exhibits anj works of FAP artists are frequently reproduced in circulated magazines. In. the .L art world, the contribution oi me FAP was, and is, recognized as a vital force in American Ait, almost the originator of an art ;ennaissance in America. The Utah FAP. renamed the Utah Statewide WPA Art Project, is a tremendous factor in the cultural life of the state, keeping Utah art talent at home instead of forcing migration to metropolitan areas; fostering and encouraging native artists and bringing art to every corner of the state. This exhibit, done in a variety of techniques and media, is representative of the creative art expression possible to Utahns and to American artists in general because of the WPA Art Project.
