NATIONAL CONVENTION Kt-v- a - -- Omar Runnel and John Vieta of Helper, students at the University of Utah, have received congratulatory cards from the scholarship committee of the university in recognition of their high scholastic records for the autumn quarter. The Federation of Women's clubs of Utah have added a new department to their recognized club activities to be known at "Problems of Industry" and have announced Mrs. A. Frank Drury of Helper as state chairman of the new phase. BETTER YEAR FOR COAL SEEN BY MINING CONGRESS Reflecting optimism jn reports that 1040 will be a banner year for coal mining, manufacturers selling to the three and one-halbillion dollar industry are making their plans to exhibit at the 17th Annual Coal Convention and Exposition of the American Mining Congress to be held in Cincinnati. April 29 to May 3, 1H40. Advance reservations by members of the Manufacturers Division of the American Mining Congress, alone, have taken over 50 per cent of the available exhibit space, and reservations now being received in-- ! tiicate that all exhibit space will be under contract by the end of Jan uary. Under normal conditions the coal industry annually imrchases 50,000,000 worth of equipment and supplies, and manufacturers hope that 1940 buying will exceed this amount. iWth coaj production returning to more favorable levels, the industry is forging ahead in its fight to regain markets lost to competitive fuels. UTAH Beard Growing Easy For THURSDAY, HE HELPER JOURNAL At the election meeting of the Carbon Emery Woolgrowers association held in Price January 24, officers were named as follows: Ray p:es Jensen, Castle Dale, ident; Felix Bruno, Price, vice president; John Bene, Helper, secretary; Leon Moynier, Price, treasurer; directors, Alex Bene of Helper, Gust William Nicoledemos of Scofield; Marsing and Bernard Ariat of Price. Selected to represent this area on the board of directors of the Utah Woolgrowers association are Harry Mahleres for Carbon county and Mr. Jensen for Emery county. Among the speakers at last week's annual meeting was R. Scott Zimmerman, head of the United Siates Biological Survey for Utah, who outlined the survey's program for the com. ing year in regard to controlling predatory animals. He discussed the ways in which the stockmen can help in operating the program successfully. Price Legion Will Be Hosts To District Convention According to August Litizzette, district vice commander, Price post No. 3 of the American Legion, will be host to the district Legion convention sometime in the near future, probably next month. The entertainment committee, of which J. W. Hussey is the chairman, has been placed in charge of arrangements and will set the time and place for the gathering. Discussion was entered into by the Legionnaires last Thursday evening of the advisability of conducting a series of boxing cards again this winter in Price. K. L. McBeth was delegated to investigate the matte, and report at a later meeting. Membership of the Price post is now 12S. Vice Commander William Jensen, reported, and two membership teams are now at work, seeking to bring the number uP to 140. Losers in the recent membership securing contest are to be the hosts this evening, Thursday, following the post's meeting, at a stag party in the Price Legion hall. in 1929, and this modernization of coal mines is proceeding at an accel- erating pace. BANQUET The annual meeting and fellowship dinner of the Utah National Parks Council, which was scheduled for Saturday evening, February 3rd at the Brigham Young university, has been postponed until March 2nd at the same place, due to conflicts arising in connection with a National Training course and other events, announces President Henry A. Gardner. This annual meeting is especially for all Scouters and their partners council the territory throughout which includes all of Southern Utah, East portion of Clark and Lincoln counties in Nevada and the northern i,o,tion of Coconino and Mohava counties in Arizona, a total of square miles. The annual meeting begins with a fellowship dinner at 6 p.m in Room D, and continues with the annual business meeting at 8 p.m. in the College Hall. The general public is invited. All planning to attend the dinner must make reservations not later than February 28 at the Council Headquarters in Provo. Tickets will be 75c per plate. The annual meeting committee consists of Or. M. W. Merrill, chairman; assisted by Dr. T. Earl Pardoe, Professor C. J. Hart, and Roy Passey, all of Provo. This committee is working hard to have an unusually tine presentation of Scouting and its accomplishments in the council at the annual meeting. Special effort is being put forth by E. Tuttle, council finance chairman, and D. O. Wight, council organization chairman, to have every dist-tric- t with its share of the council budget paid in full and all troops registered by February 1st.
