Notice is hereby given that Helper Municipal Corporation has made application in accordance with the requirements of the Laws of Utah to appropriate 2 c.f.s. of water from Beaver creek in Carbon County, Utah. B. & M. and conveyed a distance of approx. seven miles where it will be used from January 1st to December 31st lncl. of each year for domestic and municipal purposes by the inhabitants of the city of Helper. This application Is designated in the State Engineer's Office as File No. 11307. GEORGE M. BACON, State Engineer. Date of first publication, October SHOULD October TherPsvfe THE RAILROADS Under normal conditions, the railroads of the United States consume 23 per cent of all the coal produced, 25 per cent of all the lumber produced, 28 per cent of all the steel produced, and 20 per cent of all the paint produced. Other material used by them is in proportion to these figures. In 1929 the railroads employed approximately two and one half million men. At present the employ barely one million. In case the railroads can regain their lost business it not only means the calling back of one and bne half million railroad men, but it will mean an increase of 23, 25, 28 and 20 per cent respectfully in employment in the other mentioned industries. This increase of the business of these other industries will automatically increase the employment of clerks, laborers and persons in all walks of life. The trucks permitted to operate on a roadbed paid for mostly from railroad taxation is analogous to taking the taxes from an automobile company and using them to erect a building out in the street in front of them and let another person sell the same make of cars with just the payment of a city license. A condition like this exists today. As long as It is permitted to continue, of course, the trucks can make the haul cheaper than the railroads. If this were stopped, the loss of business by the factories building the trucks would be offset by the millions of employes in all walks of life being placed back on a payroll and purchasing passenger cars. The loss of gasoline business to service stations who have been selling to trucks would be offset by the increased amount of gasoline sold to passenger car owners. This employment would increase the demand for farm produce and all the farmer truck drivers could go back to their farms. I believe the railroads are the hub of all industries.
