MARCH 24. 1932 THOSE WHO CAMNOT LEARN As a substitute for "superficial remedies adapted at Washington and loaded upon the treasury the last two years," William Q. McAdoo, former secretary of the treasury, has suggested the government fix and control the price upon wheat and cotton. To the poverty-stricke- n farmers of the nation, it appears as a ray of hope, this plan of giving American grown wheat a protective margin of 65 cents per bushel over world wheat, with a itnilar protection of 12 cents per pound on home grown short staple cotton. It is a wonderful idea for getting votes, but as to practicability it is on a par with the federal farm board. Several years ago the writer branded the basic principles of the farm board as unsound in an editorial which attracted the attention of Alexander Legge himself in a demand for an apology. The opology was not written, and events since that time have proven the whole thing was a flop. The government lost millions thru market manipulations and the wheat grower still is as poor as ever. There is no principle, basic or otherwise, by which the federal government now can fix aud control the price of wheat and cotton, without offering a similar protection to every other industry in the nation. Coal and copper are entitled to the same protection as wheat and cotton; cattle and sheep are entitled to that protection if one must be given. Our politicians have not yet learned how to conduct ourgovern ment upon a paying basis. In face of this condemn ing fact, there is little reason why they should endeavor to control private business, Most of us, as a rule, do not mind being lied to the hurt is in the insult to our intelligence WASHINGTON. March 23 Coal, once the kins of industry, was described to a senate subcommittee today as deserving of law treatment to special help it to Its feet. of a bill to that end Senator Davis and Representative Kelly of Pennsylvania urged regunroduction lation nf Mtuminous uuder government supervision as an antidate for overproduction competition and the present ilk of the business. the industry was now Kelly said "on srnnnmll! failure." Their hill to nermit regional as sociations of operators for the purpose of setting up production schedules consistent with demand ot riroi nHcna was tiortraved as the only solution to the industry's problems. Having the indorsement of the United Mine Worker of America, the measure would waive anti trust law restrictions against such combinations as long as they were i "ih niihlta interest." A gov ernment commission, before which all such agreements wouia nave to be submitted for approval, wouia be created to protect the public. Certain rights to union labor, such as the privilege of soliciting memberships in the mine union n or open fields, aUo from would he guaranteed by the proposal. The hearing was confined to statements from the two sponsors, with representatives of the operators and the mine workers' union to be heard later. The committee will hear the labor side Thursday and the others next month. anti-trut- "cut-throa- it t" non-unio- AN INVESTMENT WITH GUARANTEED RETURNS In these days when people ate inclined to invest cautiously, it is interesting to note that here is at least one investment which can be made with perfect safety.
