During the last holiday season, as in the past, tragedy came to many homes. 1t c-ame in the form of fire. In some instances. it left dead, •maimed annd suffeiing human beings behind. In one - w hicl1 startcd WI"th a CJmstmas · case a £1re tree d estroyed most uf a town. So again, the nation has been shown that fire is one of the greatest menaces to life and property-and a menace which is always waiting for a chance to sti·ike. ,, d b Yet th e teni bl e to ll w hi·c h fire too k in 1 ""9 nee not e re· peated in 1950. Fire is not an enemy against which there is no practical defence. It is, on the contrary, an enemy which can be captured and controlled. The experts say that something like 90 per cent of all fires are unnecessary-they could have been prevented with just a little thought, a little time, a few simple precautions. Most fires start from the simplist hazards-carelessness with smoking materials, frayed electric cords, improperly main· tained stoves and furnaces, accumulations of trash and so on. You don't h ave to be an authority on fire prevention to get ri d o f these hazards in your home or place of business and the cost is ll sma . This year, organized fire prevention will go ahead in high gear. 't - gtven . 1 w ill be success ful if, an d on Iy if, 1-t IS publ'1c cooperati'on everywhere.
