The signs i i urge travelers to take U S 93 at Glendale Junction as the fast· i i est route to Salt Lake City and 1 Yellowstone. The fact of the mat· ter is, Highway U S 93 through i Nevada to Salt Lake City is 112 ii miles farther than U S 91 thru ! Utah to Salt Lake City. The St George Chamber of Murray 393 ; Commerce points out that tlie 5018 South State tourist business in their city has ....................................... ................................................................ ..... _.........,,,_,.......................................................... , ...,................................................................ .......................................................................................................................... dropped off 18 per cent as compared with the same period last year due to the diversion of traf· • fie over U S 93 because of the unethical road signs in Nevada. Skiers Organize in Carbbn County The newly incoroporated Win· ter Sports association of the Carbon county area has named Bill Jacobs as its president. Accord· ing to Jacobs, his organization will promote ski areas and win· ter sports among Carbon coun· ty residents. The organi~ation is the only one of its type in the state organized on a non-profit basis. A ski shelter is being com· pleted in the mountains where hot lunches and a warm fire will be available to" skiers. Provo Has Boat Problem YEAR~ Something must be done, it has been decided by the Provo City commission to provide safer boating on Utah Lake. The matter has its complications, howWe know of no better way to begin the New Year than by ever, because the state owns the la"Ke and th,~ shores are mostly extending our thanks to our friends for their generous patronowned by private citizens. There should be inspection, it was pointed out, of all boats using age. We hope that we can be of still greater service to the lake to insure that they are adequately equipped with life you in 1948, and may the best of everything be younl preservers. In the meantime the commission is pondering the sit· uation in view of the fact that each year boating is becoming increasingly popular on Utah Lake. Dell and Helen Jensen The problem is not only Pro· 1\fid. 796- w vo's, but is being met in other 7286 South State Utah locations, it is pointed out. G~E GS II B. & W. Milk Depot I Each summer finds overloaded boats operating without life preservers on Bear Lake, Pineview Lake, Strawberry Reservoir, Panguitch Lake and many other Utah reservoirs and lakes. It is reported that more than one thousand boats are owned by as many Utahns, who move them to various lakes on trailers each summer for fishing and pleasure boating. Beet Yields Up Sugar beet yields throughout the Utah territory this season averaged ;;lightly over 19 tons per acre as compared with 17.7 tons per acre in 1946. The 10-year average is 12.3 tons per acre. The 1948 prospects indicate sugar beet prices will remain substantially the same as in 1947 when $14.50 per ton was pa1d for beets of national aver- ganizat!ons advocating overthrow of our government by force or illegal means.
