Show the conclusion that we parents are largely to blame. Man comes into this earth a selfish, inconsiderate individual, intent only upon his own comfort and convenience. Every child born is a miniature savage and will remain so unless he is taught otherwise. He is concerned with personal survival and bends his energies to that been trained. As most of this primary teaching comes before the child reaches the age of five years, the greater part will have to be done by parents. Many of us, remembering the repressions of our childhood, consciously or unconsciously are determined that our children sDouJd not be so repressed. MICKELSEN Director, Pupil Personnel Jordan School District A worried mother recently asked me why children and young people generally are so discourteous today. I have noticed this same tendency and have given it some thought, comparing the manners of youth today with those of a former generation. There can be no question but that there are more rude youngsters now, and that far too many of them fail to ob· serve the elementary niceties which are so necessary to comfortable living in our social world. After carefully consider· ing the problem, I have .come to dren should be taught to respect the rights of other members of the family. If the child is taught from the beginninB to use such common expressions as saying "Thank you'' and "Pardon me", he will never forget. bikewise, he can be taught to respect the rights and feelings of otherstaught by precept and by example. Children are all imita· tors, and if grown-ups in the family are courteous, the youngsters will likely be the same.
